Course Overview

Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) inspectors play a critical role in ensuring that materials, components, equipment, and completed works comply with approved specifications, technical standards, and contractual requirements. Effective inspection practices help organizations identify defects early, prevent non-conformities, reduce rework, and maintain consistent quality throughout project execution and operational activities. This course develops the technical knowledge and practical inspection skills required to perform QA/QC activities systematically. It covers inspection planning, quality documentation, material verification, inspection and test plans (ITPs), sampling and testing, non-conformance reporting, and the interpretation of technical specifications, drawings, and acceptance criteria. Participants also explore the application of relevant international standards and industry-specific requirements across engineering, construction, manufacturing, and oil and gas projects. Through practical exercises, inspection scenarios, and technical case studies, participants learn how to document findings accurately, coordinate with contractors and project teams, evaluate inspection results, and follow up on corrective actions. The course supports inspectors in strengthening their professional judgment, improving reporting quality, and contributing to reliable, compliant, and cost-effective project delivery.

Learning Objectives

  • Apply fundamental QA/QC principles and inspection procedures in accordance with approved quality requirements.
  • Interpret technical drawings, specifications, standards, and acceptance criteria.
  • Prepare and implement inspection checklists and inspection and test plans.
  • Verify materials, equipment, and completed works against approved documentation.
  • Conduct inspections systematically and record objective evidence.
  • Evaluate inspection and test results against defined acceptance criteria.
  • Identify, classify, and report non-conformities accurately.
  • Apply appropriate corrective action and follow-up procedures.
  • Maintain traceable inspection records and quality documentation.
  • Improve coordination, reporting, and communication with project stakeholders.

  • Roles, responsibilities, authority, and professional conduct of QA/QC inspectors.
  • Quality management systems and the relationship between inspection and project quality objectives.
  • Understanding project specifications, applicable standards, codes, and contractual requirements.
  • Reading technical drawings, revisions, and approved construction documents.
  • Inspection stages: incoming materials, in-process activities, and final inspection.
  • Inspection ethics, impartiality, evidence-based decisions, and escalation of quality concerns.
  • Practical Exercise: Review a sample project specification and identify inspection responsibilities, applicable acceptance criteria, and required quality records.
Day 2

Inspection Planning, ITPs, and Material Verification

  • Structure and purpose of inspection and test plans (ITPs).
  • Hold points, witness points, review points, and surveillance activities.
  • Preparing inspection checklists and defining inspection acceptance criteria.
  • Reviewing material submittals, technical data sheets, and certificates of conformity.
  • Material identification, marking, storage, preservation, and traceability.
  • Verification of incoming materials and equipment against purchase and project requirements.
  • Coordination with contractors, suppliers, laboratories, and client representatives.
  • Practical Exercise: Develop an inspection checklist from a sample ITP and verify a material package against specified documentation and acceptance requirements.
Day 3

Inspection Techniques, Testing, and Acceptance Criteria

  • Visual inspection principles, inspection sequencing, and evidence collection.
  • Dimensional checks, measurement tools, and verification of tolerances.
  • Understanding sampling plans and inspection frequencies.
  • Reviewing laboratory test reports and equipment test certificates.
  • Introduction to non-destructive testing (NDT) methods and their applicable limitations.
  • Inspection considerations for civil, mechanical, piping, welding, electrical, and structural works.
  • Applying approved acceptance criteria and managing borderline or inconclusive results.
  • Practical Exercise: Evaluate a simulated inspection and test package, compare the results with specified acceptance criteria, and determine the required disposition.
Day 4

Non-Conformance Management and Quality Documentation

  • Identifying, classifying, and documenting non-conformities.
  • Preparing non-conformance reports (NCRs) with clear technical evidence.
  • Distinguishing corrections, corrective actions, and preventive measures.
  • Root cause analysis using practical quality problem-solving techniques.
