Course Overview

Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) are essential to successful construction project delivery, ensuring that materials, workmanship, construction activities, and completed works comply with approved drawings, technical specifications, contractual requirements, and applicable codes and standards. An effective QA/QC system helps prevent defects, reduce rework, control project risks, and maintain the required levels of quality throughout the construction lifecycle. This course provides practical knowledge of QA/QC systems and their application across construction projects, covering quality planning, inspection and test plans (ITPs), method statements, material approvals, site inspections, testing procedures, documentation control, and nonconformity management. Participants examine the responsibilities of project teams, contractors, consultants, and quality personnel, together with the coordination required to verify compliance at each stage of construction. Through practical exercises and construction-based scenarios, participants develop the skills to prepare quality documentation, conduct inspections, evaluate test results, identify deviations, and implement corrective and preventive actions. The course emphasizes systematic quality control, traceable documentation, effective coordination, and proactive defect prevention to support project compliance, timely delivery, and long-term asset reliability.

Course Outline

Day 1

QA/QC Fundamentals and Construction Quality Planning

  • Principles, objectives, and scope of quality assurance and quality control.
  • Differences between QA systems, QC inspections, verification, and testing.
  • Quality requirements throughout the construction project lifecycle.
  • Understanding contracts, technical specifications, approved drawings, and applicable codes.
  • Roles and responsibilities of clients, consultants, contractors, and QA/QC personnel.
  • Developing project quality plans and defining quality objectives.
  • Establishing quality procedures, responsibilities, approval workflows, and reporting lines.
  • Identifying construction quality risks and planning preventive controls.
  • Practical Exercise: Develop a preliminary project quality plan identifying quality objectives, responsibilities, applicable requirements, and key control activities.
Day 2

Inspection and Test Plans, Materials, and Construction Workmanship

  • Structure and preparation of inspection and test plans (ITPs).
  • Defining inspection stages, hold points, witness points, review points, and acceptance criteria.
  • Preparing inspection requests, checklists, and method statement review requirements.
  • Material submittals, technical approvals, certificates, and incoming material inspections.
  • Verifying storage, handling, identification, and traceability of construction materials.
  • Inspection of civil and structural works, including reinforcement, formwork, concrete, and dimensional checks.
  • Overview of inspection requirements for mechanical, electrical, and other construction disciplines.
  • Coordinating laboratory testing, field testing, and third-party inspections where required.
  • Practical Exercise: Prepare an ITP and inspection checklist for a selected construction activity, defining inspection stages, acceptance criteria, and required records.
Day 3

Site Inspections, Testing, and Compliance Verification

  • Planning and conducting routine and activity-specific site inspections.
  • Verifying work against approved drawings, specifications, and method statements.
  • Inspection readiness, notification procedures, and coordination with project stakeholders.
  • Concrete inspection and testing, including sampling, slump testing, and compressive strength results.
  • Overview of welding inspection, nondestructive testing, and relevant mechanical quality checks.
  • Electrical installation inspections and testing requirements where applicable.
  • Identifying workmanship defects, deviations, incomplete work, and installation deficiencies.
  • Reviewing test reports and determining compliance with acceptance requirements.
  • Practical Exercise: Review a simulated construction inspection package, evaluate test results, identify deviations, and document the required follow-up actions.
Day 4

Nonconformity Management and Quality Documentation

  • Identifying and classifying nonconformities and construction defects.
  • Preparing nonconformity reports (NCRs) with clear descriptions and supporting evidence.
  • Distinguishing between correction, corrective action, and preventive risk controls.
  • Applying root cause analysis techniques, including the 5 Whys and cause-and-effect analysis.
  • Evaluating proposed dispositions such as rework, repair, or other approved resolutions.
  • Managing corrective actions, reinspection, retesting, and formal closeout.
  • Maintaining inspection records, material certificates, test reports, and quality registers.
  • Document control, revision management, and quality dossier preparation.
  • Practical Exercise: Prepare an NCR for a construction defect, analyse its root cause, and develop a corrective action and verification plan.
Day 5

Quality Audits, Performance Monitoring, and Project Closeout

  • Conducting internal quality audits and monitoring compliance with approved procedures.
  • Evaluating contractor and subcontractor quality performance.
  • Establishing quality KPIs, including defect rates, rework, inspection acceptance, and NCR closure time.
  • Analysing recurring defects and identifying opportunities for preventive improvement.
  • Monitoring outstanding inspections, punch-list items, and unresolved quality issues.
  • Coordinating final inspections, testing completion, and acceptance activities.
  • Preparing as-built records, inspection documentation, test reports, and final quality dossiers.
  • Capturing lessons learned and integrating quality improvements into future projects.
  • Practical Exercise: Develop a construction project quality closeout plan covering outstanding inspections, NCR closure, documentation completeness, quality performance indicators, and final acceptance requirements.
