Course Overview

Protection relays are essential components of electrical power systems, protecting transformers, generators, motors, transmission lines, and distribution networks against electrical faults and abnormal operating conditions. Correct relay configuration and testing help ensure that protection schemes operate selectively, isolate faults rapidly, minimize equipment damage, and maintain power system reliability. This course provides practical knowledge of protection relay principles, configuration methods, protection settings, and commissioning and testing procedures. Participants will explore common protection functions, including overcurrent, earth fault, differential, distance, under/overvoltage, and frequency protection. The programme also covers relay coordination, secondary injection testing, trip circuit verification, event and disturbance analysis, and the use of relay configuration software and test equipment. Through practical exercises and representative power system scenarios, participants will develop the skills required to configure relay settings, verify protection functions, identify testing discrepancies, and document test results. The course emphasizes systematic testing, safe working practices, and compliance with applicable IEC standards and manufacturer recommendations to support reliable protection performance in substations, industrial facilities, utilities, and power generation installations.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the operating principles and role of protection relays in electrical power systems.
  • Identify common relay types, protection functions, and their applications.
