The Project Sponsorship & Steering Committee Effectiveness Training Course equips project sponsors, senior responsible owners, steering committee members, and the project and PMO leaders who support them with the understanding, skills, and practical tools needed to provide effective direction, oversight, and support to projects and programs. In government entities, ministries, public authorities, banks, healthcare systems, energy and utility companies, and large corporations, research and experience consistently show that active, capable sponsorship is one of the strongest predictors of project success. Steering committees, when well designed and well run, provide timely decisions, resolve conflicts, secure resources, and keep initiatives aligned with strategy and value. In practice, sponsorship and steering committees often fall short. Sponsors may be appointed because of seniority rather than capacity and commitment, may not understand their accountability for the business case and benefits, or may delegate the role entirely to the project manager. Steering committees may be too large, lack clear terms of reference and decision rights, receive long status reports rather than decision-focused papers, or spend meetings reviewing activity instead of resolving issues. Some committees micromanage delivery, while others provide little challenge and approve plans without testing assumptions. Escalations may be delayed, conflicts between departments may remain unresolved, and decisions may be deferred, causing projects to lose momentum. This course provides a practical framework for effective sponsorship and steering committee performance, informed by recognized project governance guidance and widely used project management methods. Participants learn the role and accountabilities of the sponsor across the project lifecycle, including ownership of the business case and benefits, strategic alignment, securing resources, championing change, and making or escalating key decisions, as well as common sponsorship failures and how to avoid them. The program covers building an effective sponsor and project manager partnership, designing steering committees with clear purpose, terms of reference, membership that represents business, user, and supplier interests, decision rights, and tolerances for management by exception. Participants then learn how to run effective steering committee meetings, including agenda design, decision-focused papers and reports, constructive challenge of information, handling escalations and stage gate decisions, managing conflict and organizational politics, and maintaining stakeholder alignment. The course also addresses sponsorship in agile and hybrid delivery and its relationship with product ownership, sponsor behaviors that support or undermine delivery, the sponsor's role in troubled projects and benefits realization, and how to assess and improve the effectiveness of sponsors and steering committees. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with case studies, sponsor and steering committee role plays, a simulated steering committee meeting, and practical tool development. Participants leave with a sponsor role and accountability checklist, a sponsor and project manager partnership agreement template, steering committee terms of reference, a tolerance and escalation framework, a decision-focused steering committee paper template, a meeting agenda and minutes template, and a steering committee effectiveness self-assessment.
