Course Overview

The Project Portfolio Management Training Course equips portfolio managers, PMO leaders, strategy professionals, and senior decision makers with the principles, methods, and practical tools needed to select, prioritize, balance, fund, and oversee portfolios of projects and programmes so that they deliver the greatest strategic value within available resources. In government entities, ministries, public authorities, banks, healthcare systems, energy and utility companies, and large corporations, demand for new projects almost always exceeds the funding, people, and management capacity available. Portfolio management provides the structured decision making needed to invest in the right initiatives, at the right time, in the right combination. Without effective portfolio management, organizations often start too many projects at once, spread resources thinly, and find that strategic priorities are delayed while lower-value initiatives continue. Project selection may be driven by the influence of sponsors rather than objective criteria, business cases may be evaluated inconsistently, and dependencies and resource constraints may be ignored when approving new work. Once approved, projects are rarely reviewed against changing priorities, and underperforming or no longer relevant projects may continue simply because they have already started. Leadership may lack a consolidated view of what is being delivered, what it costs, what value it is producing, and whether the portfolio as a whole is aligned with strategy. This course provides a comprehensive and practical approach to project portfolio management, informed by internationally recognized portfolio management standards and guidance. Participants learn the concepts of portfolios, programmes, and projects, the role of portfolio management in executing strategy, and the portfolio management cycle. The program covers linking the portfolio to strategic objectives, structuring portfolios by categories, investment themes, and organizational levels, and managing demand through structured intake and initial screening. Participants then learn how to design evaluation criteria and scoring models, prioritize initiatives using weighted scoring and multi-criteria decision analysis, and balance the portfolio across risk and return, short-term and long-term value, mandatory and discretionary investments, and different strategic objectives. The course also addresses capacity and resource-constrained portfolio planning, portfolio funding and budgeting including annual and rolling approaches, portfolio roadmaps and dependency management, portfolio governance and decision rights, portfolio-level risk and benefits management, portfolio performance monitoring and reporting, rebalancing, and decisions to pause, re-scope, or stop initiatives. Participants also learn how to assess portfolio management maturity, select supporting tools, and implement or improve portfolio management in their organization. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with portfolio case studies, scoring model design exercises, prioritization and balancing simulations, capacity planning workshops, and portfolio review role plays. Participants leave with a portfolio management framework outline, a portfolio structure and categorization template, a demand intake form and screening checklist, an evaluation and scoring model, a portfolio prioritization and balancing tool, a capacity-constrained portfolio plan, a portfolio dashboard design, and a portfolio management implementation roadmap.

It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries, government entities, and public authorities managing portfolios of infrastructure, digital government, and strategic initiatives; in banks and financial institutions managing technology, regulatory, and business change investments; in healthcare systems prioritizing facility, clinical, and system investments; and in energy, utilities, oil and gas, construction, and technology organizations managing capital and improvement portfolios.
