Course Overview

The Project Planning & Scheduling Techniques Training Course equips project managers, planners, engineers, and project team members with the proven techniques needed to develop realistic, logic-driven project plans and schedules and to use them effectively to control time and delivery. In government entities, ministries, public authorities, banks, healthcare systems, energy and utility companies, construction, engineering, and technology organizations, and large corporations, projects often fail to meet deadlines not because of the tools used, but because of weak planning: unclear scope, incomplete work breakdown, unrealistic duration estimates, missing logic, ignored resource constraints, and schedules that are not maintained once work begins. Planning and scheduling are frequently treated as software tasks rather than as disciplines grounded in sound methods. Schedules may be built directly in a tool without first defining scope and work packages, durations may be based on optimistic guesses, dependencies may be incomplete, and schedule uncertainty may not be assessed. When delays occur, teams may compress schedules without understanding the cost and risk implications. Different stakeholders may also need different levels of schedule detail, from executive milestone views to detailed look-ahead plans, which many projects do not provide. This course focuses on the underlying techniques that make schedules reliable, regardless of the software used. Participants learn the project planning process, from defining scope and developing the work breakdown structure and WBS dictionary to defining and sequencing activities using the precedence diagramming method and different types of dependencies. The program covers duration estimating techniques, including analogous, parametric, three-point, and expert-based estimating, and manual critical path method calculations using forward and backward passes to determine the critical path and float. Participants then learn resource planning, loading, leveling, and smoothing, critical chain concepts, schedule compression through crashing and fast-tracking, rolling wave planning, schedule levels and milestone schedules, and planning approaches for agile and hybrid projects. The course also addresses schedule risk analysis using quantitative methods such as Monte Carlo simulation, baselining and progress measurement, earned schedule and earned value indicators, look-ahead scheduling, schedule change control, schedule quality reviews, and scheduling requirements in contracts. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with manual calculation exercises, network diagram workshops, estimating exercises, and a case study project developed throughout the five days. Participants leave with a work breakdown structure and WBS dictionary template, a network diagram and critical path calculation worksheet, a duration estimating guide, a resource histogram and leveling exercise, a schedule compression analysis, a schedule risk register, and a schedule review checklist.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the role of planning and scheduling in project success and the main causes of schedule failure on Day 1.
  • Develop a clear project scope statement, work breakdown structure, and WBS dictionary as the foundation for scheduling.
  • Apply activity definition and sequencing techniques using the precedence diagramming method and appropriate dependency types.
  • Apply duration estimating techniques, including analogous, parametric, three-point, and expert-based estimating, to produce realistic durations.
  • Calculate early and late dates, total float, and free float using forward and backward pass calculations to identify the critical path.
  • Develop resource plans and apply resource loading, leveling, and smoothing to produce feasible schedules.
  • Evaluate critical chain concepts and the use of buffers to manage schedule uncertainty.
  • Apply schedule compression techniques, including crashing and fast-tracking, and assess their cost, risk, and quality implications.
  • Design schedule levels, milestone schedules, look-ahead schedules, and rolling wave plans suited to different stakeholders and project phases.
  • Apply planning approaches for agile and hybrid projects, including release planning, iterations, and visual workflow management.
  • Assess schedule risk using qualitative methods and quantitative techniques such as Monte Carlo simulation.
  • Implement baselining, progress measurement, earned value and earned schedule indicators, schedule change control, and schedule quality reviews by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for project managers, project planners and schedulers, planning engineers, project control professionals, and PMO staff responsible for developing and managing project schedules. It is also highly relevant for engineers, technical leads, IT and digital project leads, construction and site managers, and team leaders who contribute estimates, plan work packages, or review schedules prepared by others. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries, government entities, and public authorities managing infrastructure, facility, and transformation projects; in banks and financial institutions managing technology and business change projects; in healthcare systems managing facility and system implementation projects; and in energy, utilities, construction, engineering, manufacturing, and service organizations managing capital, maintenance, and improvement projects. Contract managers who review contractor schedules, and professionals preparing for project management certifications or planning roles, will also benefit from the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how sound planning and scheduling techniques support project delivery.
  • Break down project scope into a clear work breakdown structure with well-defined work packages.
  • Define and sequence activities using correct logic and dependency types.
  • Estimate activity durations using appropriate techniques and document assumptions.
  • Draw network diagrams and calculate the critical path and float manually.
  • Identify resource conflicts and apply leveling and smoothing to resolve them.
  • Compare options for shortening schedules and select the most cost-effective approach.
  • Prepare schedules at different levels of detail for different audiences.
  • Apply planning practices suitable for agile and hybrid projects.
  • Identify schedule risks and interpret the results of quantitative schedule risk analysis.
  • Measure progress, calculate schedule performance indicators, and manage schedule changes.
  • Review schedules systematically and identify common scheduling errors.
