Course Overview

The Programme Management Training Course equips programme managers, senior project managers, PMO professionals, and sponsors with the principles, processes, and practical tools needed to plan, govern, and deliver programmes that achieve strategic objectives and realize benefits. A programme is a group of related projects and activities managed in a coordinated way to deliver outcomes and benefits that would not be achieved by managing them separately. In government entities, ministries, public authorities, banks, healthcare systems, energy and utility companies, construction, infrastructure, and technology organizations, and large corporations, strategic initiatives such as infrastructure programmes, service improvement programmes, system implementations, capital investment programmes, and national initiatives are typically delivered as programmes. Many organizations manage programmes as large projects or as loose collections of projects with a common name. As a result, the link between strategy, component projects, and benefits may be weak, interdependencies between projects may not be managed, resources may be contested, and decisions may be made project by project without considering the overall programme. Programme governance may be unclear, roles such as senior responsible owner, programme manager, and business change manager may be undefined, and programme reporting may aggregate project status without providing insight into programme-level risks, benefits, and trade-offs. Programmes may also lose alignment with strategy as circumstances change, and benefits may not be realized because outputs are delivered without the business changes needed to use them. This course provides a comprehensive and practical approach to programme management, informed by internationally recognized programme management standards and frameworks. Participants learn the differences between projects, programmes, and portfolios, the types of programmes, and the programme lifecycle from identification and definition through delivery and closure. The program covers strategic alignment and programme justification, defining the programme vision, target outcomes, and blueprint, and developing the programme business case. Participants then learn benefits management, stakeholder engagement and communication, programme governance and organization, and the roles of the sponsor, senior responsible owner, programme board, programme manager, business change managers, and programme office. The course also addresses programme planning, including roadmaps, tranches, and scheduling of component projects, dependency management, programme financial management and funding, resource management across component projects, programme-level risk and issue management, quality and assurance, change control, integration and coordination of component projects, programme performance monitoring and reporting, transition and business change management, and programme closure. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with programme case studies, planning and governance design workshops, dependency and benefits mapping exercises, and a programme simulation. Participants leave with a programme mandate and definition template, a programme blueprint outline, a programme business case template, a benefits map and benefits realization plan, a programme governance and organization structure, a programme roadmap and tranche plan, a dependency register, a programme risk and issue register, and a programme dashboard design.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for programme managers, senior project managers moving into programme roles, programme office and PMO professionals, and portfolio managers responsible for coordinating multiple related projects. It is also highly relevant for sponsors, senior responsible owners, programme board members, business change managers, and functional managers who contribute to or oversee programmes. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries, government entities, and public authorities delivering infrastructure, service improvement, digital government, and national programmes; in banks and financial institutions managing technology, regulatory, and business change programmes; in healthcare systems delivering facility, clinical, and system programmes; and in energy, utilities, oil and gas, construction, infrastructure, and technology organizations managing capital and improvement programmes. Strategy and planning professionals who link strategic objectives to delivery will also benefit from the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain what makes a programme different from a project and why it needs a different management approach.
  • Define a programme clearly, including its vision, outcomes, scope, and blueprint.
  • Build a programme business case that remains useful throughout delivery.
  • Map and plan the benefits a programme is expected to deliver.
  • Set up programme governance with clear roles and decision making.
  • Plan a programme roadmap and group projects into meaningful tranches.
  • Identify and manage dependencies between projects.
  • Allocate funding and shared resources effectively across component projects.
  • Manage risks and issues that affect the programme as a whole.
  • Integrate and coordinate component projects so they deliver coherent outcomes.
