Course Overview

This practical course equips manufacturers and sustainability teams to measure the environmental performance of individual products using life cycle assessment under ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. Unlike organizational carbon inventories, it works at product level, from raw material extraction through manufacturing, use and end of life. Participants learn to define goal, scope, functional units and system boundaries, collect plant data, select background datasets, apply allocation rules and interpret impact results, including product carbon footprints under ISO 14067. The program then covers Environmental Product Declarations under ISO 14025: program operators, product category rules, the EN 15804 core rules and life cycle modules for construction products, independent verification, and how to commission an EPD project. Finally, the course shows how buyers, designers and green building rating schemes use EPD data, when declarations can be fairly compared, and how LCA findings guide product improvement and credible environmental claims.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain life cycle thinking and the four LCA phases under ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.
  • Define the goal, scope, functional unit and system boundary of a product study.
  • Plan plant-level data collection and select suitable background datasets.
  • Apply allocation and cut-off rules to co-products, recycled content and end of life.
  • Interpret impact results through contribution, sensitivity and uncertainty analysis.
  • Quantify a product carbon footprint under ISO 14067, including biogenic carbon.
  • Explain the roles of ISO 14025, program operators and product category rules.
  • Apply the EN 15804 module structure to construction products.
  • Prepare LCA reports and EPD content ready for independent verification.
  • Manage an EPD project with internal teams, consultants and verifiers.
  • Evaluate how buyers and green building schemes use EPDs.
  • Use LCA results to improve products and support credible environmental claims.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for sustainability and environmental managers, LCA and product stewardship specialists, product development and process engineers, quality and technical managers, and professionals responsible for preparing or commissioning product environmental data. It is also suitable for export and commercial managers, procurement and specification teams, developers' sustainability teams, consultants, architects and design engineers who request, review or use Environmental Product Declarations. The program is particularly relevant to manufacturers of cement, concrete, steel, aluminum, glass, insulation, pipes, chemicals and other construction and industrial products, and to exporters and developers facing growing buyer demand for verified product data.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the principles and phases of ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.
  • Formulate a goal and scope statement for a product life cycle study.
  • Build a process map and life cycle inventory from plant data.
  • Assess data quality and the representativeness of background datasets.
  • Justify allocation choices for co-products and recycled materials.
  • Calculate and interpret impact results and identify environmental hotspots.
  • Report a product carbon footprint consistent with ISO 14067.
  • Select the applicable product category rules for a planned EPD.
  • Structure EPD results by EN 15804 life cycle modules.
  • Prepare documentation that supports independent verification of an EPD.
  • Review supplier EPDs for comparability, validity and project fitness.
  • Develop an action plan linking LCA findings to product improvement.
