Course Overview

The Procurement Risk Management Training Course equips procurement, supply chain, contracts, and risk professionals with a structured approach to identifying, assessing, mitigating, and monitoring the risks that arise throughout the procurement lifecycle. In government entities, ministries, banks, oil and gas companies, and large corporations, procurement decisions carry significant financial, operational, legal, and reputational consequences. A poorly defined requirement, a weak supplier, an unbalanced contract, a disrupted supply source, or an integrity failure can lead to cost overruns, service interruptions, project delays, regulatory findings, and loss of public or stakeholder trust. Many organizations manage procurement risk informally or only after problems occur. Risk assessments may be limited to high-value tenders, supplier due diligence may focus only on initial qualification, contract risks may not be tracked after award, and warning signs of fraud or collusion may be missed. Procurement risk may also be managed separately from enterprise risk management, business continuity, and third-party risk frameworks, leaving gaps in oversight. This course provides a practical, lifecycle-based approach aligned with recognized risk management principles such as ISO 31000 and the COSO enterprise risk management framework. Participants learn how to identify risks at each stage of procurement, from planning and specification through sourcing, evaluation, award, contract execution, delivery, and payment. The program covers supplier risk assessment across financial, operational, compliance, cybersecurity, geopolitical, and sustainability dimensions, risk analysis using likelihood and impact, risk registers and heat maps, and mitigation strategies including contract terms, performance security, insurance, dual sourcing, and contingency planning. It also addresses fraud and corruption risks, conflict of interest, bid rigging and collusion indicators, key risk indicators, supply continuity planning, and procurement risk governance within the three lines model. Throughout the five days, participants apply each tool to real procurement activities from their own organizations. They leave with a procurement risk register, a supplier risk assessment tool, a fraud and integrity red flags checklist, a contract risk allocation review, a set of key risk indicators, and a procurement risk management implementation plan.

  • Analyze the nature, sources, and consequences of procurement risk and its link to organizational objectives on Day 1.

  • Identify risks at each stage of the procurement lifecycle, from planning and specification to contract closure and payment.
  • Assess procurement risks using structured likelihood and impact criteria and prioritize them using risk matrices and heat maps.

  • Evaluate supplier risk across financial, operational, compliance, cybersecurity, geopolitical, and sustainability dimensions.
  • Design supplier due diligence and ongoing monitoring processes for critical and high-risk suppliers.

  • Identify fraud, corruption, conflict of interest, bid rigging, and collusion risks and implement preventive and detective controls.
  • Develop supply continuity and contingency plans for critical goods and services, including dual sourcing and inventory buffers.
  • Implement key risk indicators and reporting mechanisms to monitor procurement risk exposure.
  • Design a procurement risk management implementation plan for the participant's organization by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for procurement and supply chain directors, procurement managers, category managers, contracts managers, tendering officers, and supplier relationship managers responsible for procurement decisions and supplier performance. It is also highly relevant for risk managers, enterprise risk management teams, internal auditors, compliance officers, and governance professionals who oversee procurement and third-party risk. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries and government entities managing public procurement under strict transparency, integrity, and value-for-money requirements; in banks and financial institutions managing third-party and outsourcing risk under regulatory expectations; and in oil and gas and industrial organizations managing high-value contracts, critical equipment and materials, contractor safety, and complex international supply chains. Legal advisors, finance professionals, project managers, and technical department heads who define requirements, approve contracts, or manage suppliers will also benefit from the course.
