The Process Risk Mapping & Internal Control Design Training Course equips internal control professionals, risk managers, internal auditors, process owners, and finance and operations managers with the practical skills needed to document business processes, identify the risks within them, and design effective, efficient internal controls that protect assets, ensure reliable information, support compliance, and help achieve organizational objectives. In government entities, ministries, public authorities, banks and financial institutions, energy, oil and gas, and utility companies, healthcare systems, telecommunications providers, and large corporations, most errors, losses, fraud, and compliance breaches originate in day-to-day processes such as procurement, payments, revenue collection, payroll, inventory, asset management, and service delivery. Understanding how these processes work and where they can fail is the foundation of strong internal control. Many organizations have controls that are poorly designed, undocumented, or disconnected from actual risks. Process documentation may be outdated or absent, risks may be described generically without reference to specific process steps, and controls may overlap in some areas while leaving critical gaps in others. Segregation of duties conflicts may exist in systems and workflows, approvals may be performed without meaningful review, and reliance on manual controls may create inefficiency and error. Controls may lack clear owners, frequency, and evidence, making them difficult to test and assure, and control improvements may add bureaucracy without reducing risk. This course provides a structured and practical approach to process risk mapping and internal control design, informed by internationally recognized internal control and risk management frameworks and established internal audit and control practices. Participants learn internal control concepts, components, and principles, the relationship between objectives, risks, and controls, and the roles of management, internal control functions, and internal audit. The program covers process documentation techniques, including high-level process mapping, SIPOC analysis, swimlane flowcharts, and narratives, identifying process-level risks and control objectives, and building risk and control matrices. Participants then learn control types and characteristics, including preventive, detective, and corrective controls, manual, automated, and IT-dependent controls, application controls, IT general controls, and entity-level controls, as well as segregation of duties, authorization and delegation of authority, reconciliations, access and physical controls, and fraud risk considerations. The course also addresses principles of effective control design, including precision, frequency, ownership, and evidence, identifying key controls, conducting walkthroughs, assessing design and operating effectiveness, classifying and remediating control deficiencies, rationalizing and optimizing controls, automation and continuous controls monitoring, and applying these methods to common processes such as procure-to-pay, order-to-cash, record-to-report, hire-to-retire, inventory and asset management, and government service delivery. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with process mapping workshops, risk identification exercises, risk and control matrix development, segregation of duties analysis, control design and walkthrough simulations, and case studies. Participants leave with a process mapping toolkit, a SIPOC template, a risk and control matrix template, a control attributes and documentation guide, a segregation of duties conflict matrix, a walkthrough and design assessment checklist, a control deficiency evaluation and remediation template, and a control optimization plan for a selected process.
