Course Overview

Process capability analysis is a fundamental quality management technique used to determine whether a process can consistently produce outputs within specified engineering and customer requirements. Understanding process capability indices, particularly Cp and Cpk, enables organizations to evaluate process performance, identify quality risks, and establish priorities for improvement. This course provides a practical understanding of process capability analysis, covering specification limits, process variation, statistical distributions, data collection, process stability, and the calculation and interpretation of Cp and Cpk indices. Participants will explore the relationship between process capability, process centering, statistical process control (SPC), and quality performance, while learning to distinguish between a stable process and a capable process. Through numerical exercises, case studies, and statistical analysis, participants will develop the skills to interpret capability results, identify sources of variation, assess process performance against specifications, and recommend targeted improvements. The course is applicable to manufacturing, engineering, quality assurance, production, and operational excellence functions seeking to strengthen process consistency and reduce defects.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the principles and business applications of process capability analysis.
  • Differentiate between specification limits, control limits, and process performance measures.
  • Evaluate process stability before conducting capability analysis.
  • Calculate and interpret Cp and Cpk indices using appropriate statistical methods.
  • Explain the differences between potential process capability and actual capability.
  • Assess the effects of process variation and process centering on capability results.
  • Identify the limitations of capability indices when data assumptions are not satisfied.
  • Interpret capability results against defined quality requirements and acceptance criteria.
  • Identify improvement opportunities through analysis of process variation and defects.
  • Develop practical recommendations to improve process capability and sustain performance.
