Course Overview

The Primavera P6 Project Planning & Scheduling Training Course equips project planners, schedulers, project managers, and project control professionals with the practical skills needed to build, manage, update, and report on professional project schedules using Oracle Primavera P6. In government entities, ministries, public authorities, utilities, construction, engineering, energy, and infrastructure organizations, and large corporations delivering capital and operational projects, a reliable schedule is essential for planning resources, controlling time and cost, coordinating contractors, managing change, and supporting claims and decision making. Many schedules fail to provide the control they are intended to deliver. Work breakdown structures may be poorly structured, activities may be too long or too vague, logic may be incomplete with open ends and excessive constraints, calendars may not reflect actual working conditions, and resources and costs may not be loaded. Schedules may not be baselined properly, progress updates may be inconsistent, and reports may not show the information decision makers need. As a result, the critical path is unreliable, delays are detected late, and the schedule loses credibility with management, clients, and contractors. This hands-on course combines planning and scheduling principles with practical, step-by-step use of Primavera P6. Participants learn core scheduling concepts, including work breakdown structures, the critical path method, total and free float, calendars, and constraints, and how these are applied in P6. The program covers the P6 data structure, including the enterprise project structure, organizational breakdown structure, projects, and work breakdown structure, and guides participants through creating projects, defining calendars, adding activities and milestones, assigning durations, building logic with relationships and lags, scheduling the project, and analyzing the critical path. Participants then learn to use activity codes, filters, grouping, sorting, and layouts, define and assign resources and roles, load costs and expenses, analyze resource usage, and apply resource leveling. The course also covers establishing baselines, updating progress with actual dates, remaining durations, and percent complete types, comparing progress against the baseline, basic earned value analysis in P6, schedule quality checks using recognized assessment criteria, what-if analysis, multi-project reporting, importing and exporting schedules, and producing professional reports. This course builds practical software and scheduling skills and is not an official Oracle certification program. The course is delivered through intensive hands-on exercises in which each participant builds, resources, baselines, updates, and reports on a complete case study project in Primavera P6. Participants leave with a fully developed practice schedule, a schedule development checklist, a schedule quality checklist, standard layouts and filters, a progress update procedure, and a schedule reporting template.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze core project planning and scheduling principles, including work breakdown structures, the critical path method, float, calendars, and constraints, on Day 1.
  • Navigate the Primavera P6 interface and apply its data structure, including the enterprise project structure, organizational breakdown structure, projects, and work breakdown structure.
  • Create new projects in P6 and configure project settings, calendars, and scheduling options.
  • Develop activities and milestones with appropriate activity types and realistic durations.
  • Build complete schedule logic using relationships and lags and minimize the use of constraints and open ends.
  • Schedule projects in P6 and analyze the critical path, total float, and free float.
  • Apply activity codes, filters, grouping, sorting, and layouts to organize and present schedule information effectively.
  • Define resources and roles, assign them to activities, and load costs and expenses.
  • Analyze resource usage with profiles and spreadsheets and apply resource leveling to resolve overallocations.
  • Establish baselines and update schedule progress using actual dates, remaining durations, and appropriate percent complete types.
  • Compare progress against the baseline, apply basic earned value analysis, and assess schedule quality using recognized schedule assessment criteria.
  • Produce professional schedule reports, export and import schedules, and apply a structured schedule update and reporting procedure by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for project planners, schedulers, planning engineers, project control engineers, and project managers who develop, update, or review project schedules. It is also highly relevant for engineers, construction managers, contract managers, cost engineers, and PMO staff who need to understand, interpret, and challenge Primavera P6 schedules submitted by contractors or prepared internally. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries, government entities, and public authorities managing infrastructure, building, transport, water, and energy projects; in utilities, oil and gas, petrochemical, and power organizations delivering capital projects, shutdowns, and maintenance programs; in construction and engineering contractors and consultants; and in banks, developers, and large corporations overseeing capital investment programs. Professionals preparing for planning and scheduling roles and managers who rely on schedule information for decisions will also benefit from the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain key scheduling concepts and how they are applied in Primavera P6.
  • Set up the P6 data structure and create a new project with appropriate settings.
  • Build a logical work breakdown structure and a well-structured activity list.
  • Create correct relationships and lags to produce a logic-driven schedule.
  • Schedule a project and identify and interpret the critical path and float.
  • Organize schedule views with activity codes, filters, grouping, and layouts.
  • Load resources and costs and analyze resource demand.
  • Resolve resource overallocations using leveling and schedule adjustments.
  • Create and maintain baselines and update progress accurately.
  • Compare actual progress with the baseline and identify delays and trends.
  • Check schedule quality and correct common scheduling errors.
  • Produce clear schedule reports and exchange schedule files with other parties.
