Course Overview

The Power System Analysis Using ETAP Training Course equips electrical engineers with the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to model industrial and utility power systems and perform key power system studies using ETAP. Reliable, safe, and efficient power systems are essential for oil and gas facilities, petrochemical plants, power and water utilities, manufacturing plants, data centers, hospitals, and large commercial and infrastructure projects. Power system studies are required to design new systems, verify equipment ratings, set protective devices, assess arc flash hazards, integrate new loads and generation, and solve operational problems. The course combines power system analysis principles with practical ETAP application. Participants learn power system fundamentals, including one-line diagrams and the per-unit system, and how to build and validate ETAP models of utility sources, generators, transformers, cables, buses, motors, loads, and protective devices. The program then covers load flow analysis for voltage profiles, losses, transformer tap settings, and reactive power compensation, short circuit analysis to IEC and ANSI/IEEE methods with equipment duty evaluation, and motor starting analysis. Participants also perform protective device coordination using time-current curves, arc flash analysis in accordance with recognized standards and safe work practice guidance, harmonic analysis and filter evaluation, an introduction to transient stability and load shedding, cable sizing, and the integration of renewable energy and battery storage, and learn to prepare clear, well-documented study reports. The course is delivered through intensive hands-on ETAP modelling and analysis exercises using realistic industrial power system case studies. Participants leave with an ETAP modelling and data collection checklist, study setup guides for load flow, short circuit, motor starting, coordination, arc flash, and harmonics, a study results review checklist, and a power system study report template. This course builds practical software application skills and is not an official software vendor certification program. ETAP is a trademark of its respective owner.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the purpose of power system studies and their role in the design, safety, and operation of electrical systems on Day 1.
  • Apply power system fundamentals, including one-line diagrams, the per-unit system, and equipment modeling principles.
  • Build ETAP models of utility sources, generators, transformers, cables, buses, motors, loads, and protective devices.
  • Collect, validate, and manage equipment data to ensure accurate and reliable study results.
  • Perform load flow analysis to evaluate voltage profiles, loading, losses, transformer tap settings, and reactive power compensation.
  • Perform short circuit analysis using IEC and ANSI/IEEE methods and evaluate equipment short circuit duties and ratings.
  • Perform motor starting analysis to assess voltage dips, starting times, and starting methods.
  • Perform protective device coordination using time-current curves for relays, circuit breakers, and fuses.
  • Perform arc flash analysis in accordance with recognized standards and apply results to labeling and safe work practices.
  • Perform harmonic analysis and evaluate harmonic mitigation and filter options against recognized limits.
  • Apply the fundamentals of transient stability analysis, load shedding, cable sizing, and renewable energy and battery storage integration.
  • Interpret, document, and present power system study results and recommendations by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for electrical engineers, power system engineers, electrical design engineers, and protection engineers responsible for designing, analyzing, or operating electrical power systems. It is also relevant for electrical maintenance and reliability engineers, commissioning engineers, electrical safety professionals, and engineers moving into power system study roles. It is particularly valuable for professionals in oil and gas, refining, petrochemical, and industrial facilities; in power generation, transmission, and distribution utilities; in water and desalination utilities; in engineering, procurement, and construction contractors and electrical consulting firms; and in data centers, hospitals, airports, and large infrastructure projects. Participants should have a basic understanding of electrical power systems; prior ETAP experience is not required.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain why power system studies are required and what each study demonstrates.
  • Use one-line diagrams and the per-unit system confidently.
  • Build accurate power system models in ETAP.
  • Validate model data and recognize common data errors.
  • Run load flow studies and address voltage and loading problems.
  • Calculate short circuit currents and check equipment ratings.
  • Assess motor starting impacts and select suitable starting methods.
  • Coordinate protective devices to achieve selectivity.
  • Calculate arc flash incident energy and apply the results safely.
  • Identify harmonic problems and evaluate mitigation options.
  • Understand the basics of stability, load shedding, and renewable integration.
