The Power Plant Operations & Heat Rate Improvement Training Course equips power plant engineers, operators, and performance professionals with the knowledge and practical tools needed to operate thermal power plants efficiently and to identify, quantify, and recover heat rate losses. In gas turbine, combined cycle, steam, cogeneration, and integrated water and power plants, fuel is the largest operating cost, and even small improvements in heat rate generate substantial fuel savings, lower emissions, and improved competitiveness. Yet performance often degrades gradually through compressor fouling, condenser problems, cycle leakage, poor combustion, and suboptimal operating practices that go unnoticed without systematic monitoring. The course links plant operation directly to efficiency. Participants learn the thermodynamic principles of Brayton, Rankine, and combined cycles, heat rate and efficiency definitions, and how design, operating conditions, and ambient factors affect performance. The program then covers plant operations, including startups, shutdowns, load following, and part-load operation, and the main sources of controllable losses in gas turbines, heat recovery steam generators, boilers, steam turbines, condensers and cooling systems, feedwater heaters, and auxiliary systems. Participants also learn performance testing principles based on recognized test codes, online performance monitoring, corrected heat rate and heat rate deviation analysis, the economic value of improvements, instrumentation accuracy, and the use of digital tools to sustain performance and reduce emissions. The course is delivered through thermodynamic examples, plant performance case studies, heat rate calculation and deviation analysis exercises, and improvement planning workshops. Participants leave with a heat rate calculation worksheet, a controllable loss checklist by plant area, a heat rate deviation analysis template, a performance monitoring KPI set, and a heat rate improvement plan template.
