The Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) Training Course equips welding, static equipment, inspection, and QA/QC professionals with the knowledge and practical skills needed to specify, plan, perform, monitor, and verify post weld heat treatment of pressure vessels, piping, heat exchangers, boilers, and storage tank components in accordance with applicable codes and industry practices. PWHT is essential for reducing residual stresses, tempering hardened weld and heat-affected zones, improving toughness, and preventing service-related cracking in environments such as wet hydrogen sulfide, amine, and caustic services. Incorrect PWHT, whether omitted, under-heated, overheated, poorly controlled, or inadequately documented, can lead to cracking, distortion, loss of material properties, rejected work, and costly delays during construction and turnarounds. The course covers PWHT from metallurgical principles to field execution and verification. Participants learn the effects of welding on residual stress and microstructure, the metallurgical purposes of PWHT, and the code requirements for new construction and repair of pressure equipment and piping, including exemptions, alternatives such as temper bead welding, and service-driven PWHT requirements. The program then addresses PWHT parameters, including holding temperature, holding time, and heating and cooling rates, and PWHT methods, including furnace, local band, and internal firing, using electrical resistance, induction, and gas-fired heating. Participants also learn soak, heated, and gradient control band design, thermocouple selection, attachment, and placement, insulation, temperature recording, PWHT procedures and records, hardness testing and acceptance, common problems such as under- and over-temperature, distortion, and reheat cracking, safety precautions, and planning PWHT during projects and turnarounds. The course is delivered through code navigation exercises, PWHT procedure reviews, chart interpretation exercises, and case studies of PWHT failures. Participants leave with a PWHT requirement determination checklist, a PWHT procedure template, a thermocouple and heating band layout guide, a PWHT chart review checklist, and a PWHT inspection and documentation checklist.
