Course Overview

The Policies & Procedures (SOP) Writing Training Course equips professionals responsible for developing policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures with the knowledge and practical skills needed to write clear, accurate, usable, and compliant documents that guide consistent work, support control, and reduce risk. Policies and procedures are the backbone of how organizations operate: they define rules, standards, and the right way to perform tasks, and they underpin quality, compliance, safety, governance, and knowledge retention. In government entities, ministries, public authorities, banks, healthcare, utilities, and corporations, poorly written or outdated policies and procedures cause confusion, inconsistency, errors, non-compliance, and risk, while clear, well-structured documents enable people to do the right thing, the right way, every time. The course covers policy and procedure writing from fundamentals to a complete documentation framework. Participants learn the role and purpose of policies and procedures, the differences between policies, procedures, standard operating procedures, work instructions, and related documents, and the document hierarchy and framework. The program then addresses planning documents, identifying and analyzing the process, and gathering information from process owners and subject matter experts. Participants cover writing policies clearly, writing procedures and standard operating procedures step by step, and using structure, formatting, flowcharts, and visuals to make documents usable. Participants also examine plain language and writing style, roles, responsibilities, and controls within procedures, aligning documents with standards, regulations, and risk and compliance requirements, document control, numbering, versioning, approval, and distribution, review, maintenance, and keeping documents current, measuring usage and effectiveness, and the responsible use of templates and AI tools in documentation, with hands-on writing throughout. The course is delivered through practical writing workshops, process mapping and SOP drafting, document critique and improvement, and templates participants can reuse. Participants leave with a policy and procedure framework guide, a policy template, a standard operating procedure template, a process mapping and flowchart toolkit, and a document quality and control checklist.
