Course Overview

The Piping Stress Analysis Using CAESAR II Training Course equips piping, mechanical, and stress engineers with the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to model, analyze, and qualify piping systems using CAESAR II in accordance with applicable piping codes and equipment standards. Piping systems in refineries, petrochemical plants, gas processing and LNG facilities, power plants, and other industrial facilities are subject to pressure, weight, thermal expansion, wind, seismic, and dynamic loads. Inadequate stress analysis can lead to overstressed piping, excessive equipment nozzle loads, flange leakage, support failures, and vibration problems, while overly conservative designs add unnecessary cost. The course combines stress analysis principles with practical CAESAR II application. Participants learn the fundamentals of piping stress and flexibility, the types of stresses and load cases defined by piping codes, and criteria for selecting lines for formal analysis. The program then covers CAESAR II modelling of pipes, bends, tees, reducers, valves, flanges, expansion joints, and restraints, the setup of operating, sustained, expansion, hydrotest, and occasional load cases, including wind, seismic, and relief valve thrust, and the interpretation of code stress results, displacements, and restraint loads. Participants also learn to evaluate equipment nozzle loads against pump, compressor, turbine, air cooler, vessel, and storage tank criteria, perform flange leakage checks, design spring hangers and expansion loops, apply introductory dynamic analysis, and prepare, check, and document stress analysis reports. The course is delivered through intensive hands-on CAESAR II modelling exercises on realistic piping systems. Participants leave with a stress-critical line selection checklist, a CAESAR II modelling guide, a load case setup reference, a nozzle load and flange leakage evaluation checklist, and a stress report and model checking checklist. This course builds practical software application skills and is not an official software vendor certification program. CAESAR II is a trademark of its respective owner.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the purpose and principles of piping stress and flexibility analysis and the consequences of inadequate analysis on Day 1.
  • Explain sustained, displacement, and occasional stresses and the stress evaluation requirements of commonly used piping codes.
  • Apply criteria for identifying stress-critical lines and determining the required level of analysis.
  • Navigate the CAESAR II environment and build piping models, including pipes, bends, tees, reducers, valves, flanges, and expansion joints.
  • Model restraints and supports, including anchors, guides, line stops, resting supports, friction, and spring hangers.
  • Set up operating, sustained, expansion, hydrotest, and occasional load cases, including wind, seismic, and relief valve thrust.
  • Interpret CAESAR II results, including code stress checks, displacements, and restraint loads, and resolve overstress conditions.
  • Evaluate equipment nozzle loads for pumps, compressors, turbines, air coolers, pressure vessels, and storage tanks against applicable criteria.
  • Perform flange leakage evaluations using recognized methods.
  • Design spring hangers, expansion loops, and support arrangements to achieve acceptable stresses and loads.
  • Apply introductory dynamic analysis, including modal analysis, to identify vibration risks.
  • Prepare, check, and document stress analysis reports and apply quality assurance practices by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for piping stress engineers, piping engineers and designers, mechanical engineers, and project engineers responsible for piping stress analysis or for reviewing stress analysis results. It is also relevant for rotating and static equipment engineers who review nozzle loads, support and structural engineers, and maintenance and reliability engineers dealing with piping vibration, support, and thermal problems. It is particularly valuable for professionals in refineries, petrochemical and chemical plants, gas processing and LNG facilities, oil and gas production facilities, power and desalination plants, and engineering, procurement, and construction contractors and design consultancies. Participants should have a basic understanding of piping design; prior CAESAR II experience is not required.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain why piping stress analysis is required and what it protects.
  • Distinguish sustained, expansion, and occasional stresses and their code limits.
  • Identify which lines require formal stress analysis.
  • Build accurate piping models in CAESAR II.
  • Model supports and restraints realistically.
  • Define appropriate load cases for different design conditions.
  • Interpret stress, displacement, and restraint load results.
  • Resolve overstress and excessive load problems through design changes.
  • Check equipment nozzle loads against applicable criteria.
  • Evaluate flange leakage risk.
  • Select spring hangers and design expansion loops.
  • Prepare clear, complete stress analysis reports.
