Course Overview

The Piping Design & ASME B31.3 Process Piping Training Course equips piping, mechanical, and project engineers, designers, and inspectors with a practical understanding of how process piping systems are designed, specified, fabricated, examined, and tested in accordance with ASME B31.3. Process piping connects every item of equipment in refineries, petrochemical and chemical plants, gas processing facilities, LNG plants, pharmaceutical plants, and other process industries. Errors in design conditions, material selection, wall thickness, component ratings, flexibility, supports, fabrication, or testing can cause leaks, fatigue failures, fires, and costly rework. The course combines piping engineering practice with detailed application of the code. Participants learn the scope and structure of ASME B31.3, fluid service categories, design conditions, and allowable stresses, and how to calculate pressure design thickness, evaluate branch connections and reinforcement, and select flanges, fittings, valves, gaskets, and bolting using referenced component standards and pressure-temperature ratings. The program then addresses material selection, low-temperature toughness and impact testing requirements, corrosion allowance, piping specifications, piping layout and plant design principles, and the fundamentals of flexibility and stress analysis, including thermal expansion, sustained and occasional loads, supports, and equipment nozzle loads. Participants also examine fabrication, welding, preheat and post-weld heat treatment, examination requirements, leak testing, documentation, and common design and construction errors. The course is delivered through code navigation exercises, worked design calculations, drawing and isometric reviews, and case studies. Participants leave with a piping design basis checklist, wall thickness and branch reinforcement calculation worksheets, a piping specification review checklist, a layout and support review checklist, and an examination and leak test planning guide. This course builds practical code application skills and is not an ASME certification program; participants should use the current edition of the code applicable to their projects.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the scope, structure, and application of ASME B31.3 and its relationship with other piping codes and referenced standards on Day 1.
  • Apply fluid service categories, including normal, Category D, Category M, high pressure, and severe cyclic conditions, to piping design and examination requirements.
  • Define design pressure and temperature, allowances, and allowable stresses in accordance with the code.
  • Calculate pressure design thickness for straight pipe, including weld joint and weld strength reduction factors, corrosion allowance, and mill tolerance.
  • Evaluate branch connections and reinforcement requirements.
  • Select flanges, fittings, valves, gaskets, and bolting using referenced component standards and pressure-temperature ratings.
  • Select piping materials considering service conditions, corrosion, and low-temperature toughness and impact testing requirements.
  • Develop and review piping material specifications and line classes.
  • Apply piping layout and plant design principles, including access, maintenance, safety, and constructability, and interpret P&IDs, plot plans, and isometrics.
  • Apply the fundamentals of piping flexibility and stress analysis, including thermal expansion, sustained and occasional loads, support design, and equipment nozzle loads.
  • Apply fabrication, welding, preheat, and post-weld heat treatment requirements for process piping.
  • Plan examination, inspection, and leak testing, including hydrostatic, pneumatic, and sensitive leak tests, and prepare required documentation by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for piping engineers and designers, mechanical engineers, stress engineers, and project engineers responsible for designing, reviewing, or approving process piping systems. It is also relevant for inspection engineers, QA/QC engineers and inspectors, construction and commissioning engineers, maintenance and integrity engineers, and engineers moving into piping roles. It is particularly valuable for professionals in refineries, petrochemical and chemical plants, gas processing and LNG facilities, oil and gas production facilities, power and desalination plants, pharmaceutical and industrial plants, and engineering, procurement, and construction contractors, fabricators, and third-party inspection agencies.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Navigate ASME B31.3 and locate relevant requirements quickly.
  • Classify fluid services and apply the corresponding requirements.
  • Establish correct design conditions and allowable stresses.
  • Calculate required pipe wall thickness accurately.
  • Check branch connections for adequate reinforcement.
  • Select components with appropriate pressure-temperature ratings.
  • Select materials suitable for service and low-temperature conditions.
  • Review piping specifications and line classes.
  • Apply sound piping layout practices.
  • Understand when and how piping flexibility and stress analysis is required.
  • Apply fabrication, welding, and heat treatment requirements.
  • Plan examination and leak testing correctly.
