Course Overview

The Pipe Fabrication & Pipe Fitting Training Course equips pipe fitters, fabrication supervisors, piping engineers, and QA/QC personnel with the practical knowledge and skills needed to read piping drawings, prepare accurate take-offs, cut, bevel, fit up, and assemble piping spools, and install piping in the field to the required quality and safety standards. In refineries, petrochemical plants, oil and gas facilities, power and desalination plants, and industrial projects, the quality of pipe fabrication and fitting directly affects weld quality, alignment, leak tightness, schedule, and cost. Errors in measurement, fit-up, flange alignment, material identification, or cleanliness lead to rework, weld repairs, leaks during testing, and delays in construction and turnarounds. The course covers piping fabrication and fitting from drawings to final installation. Participants learn piping materials and components, including pipe schedules, fittings, flanges, gaskets, bolting, valves, and branch connections, and how to read P&IDs, isometrics, spool drawings, and bills of materials. The program then addresses measuring and layout tools, fabrication calculations for take-offs, center-to-end dimensions, simple and rolling offsets, and branch templates, cutting and bevelling methods, weld joint preparation and fit-up, tack welding, threaded and socket weld joints, spool fabrication, and field erection and fit. Participants also examine flange alignment and bolted joint assembly, material identification and traceability, handling and cleanliness requirements, fabrication tolerances and dimensional inspection, coordination with welding, inspection, and testing, support installation, and safe work practices. The course is delivered through drawing reading exercises, fabrication calculation workshops, fit-up and alignment demonstrations, and inspection case studies. Participants leave with a piping symbols and drawing reading guide, a fabrication calculation worksheet, a fit-up and alignment checklist, a flange assembly and bolting checklist, and a spool fabrication inspection checklist.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the role of pipe fabrication and fitting in project quality, safety, schedule, and cost on Day 1.
  • Identify piping materials and components, including pipe sizes and schedules, fittings, flanges, gaskets, bolting, valves, and branch connections.
  • Interpret P&IDs, piping isometrics, spool drawings, weld maps, and bills of materials.
  • Use measuring, layout, and alignment tools correctly and accurately.
  • Perform fabrication calculations, including take-offs, center-to-end dimensions, simple and rolling offsets, and branch and lateral layouts.
  • Apply cutting and bevelling methods and prepare weld joints in accordance with welding procedure requirements.
  • Carry out accurate fit-up, including root gap, alignment, internal misalignment control, and tack welding.
  • Fabricate threaded and socket weld joints and assemble piping spools in shop and field conditions.
  • Align flanges and assemble bolted joints using correct gasket installation and bolt tightening sequences.
  • Apply material identification, traceability, handling, and cleanliness requirements, including for stainless steel and alloy piping.
  • Apply fabrication tolerances, dimensional inspection, and coordination with welding, nondestructive examination, and pressure testing.
  • Apply safe work practices for cutting, hot work, lifting, rigging, and field installation, and install piping supports correctly by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for pipe fitters, pipe fabrication foremen and supervisors, piping construction supervisors, and fabrication shop personnel. It is also relevant for piping engineers, QA/QC inspectors and engineers, welding supervisors, maintenance and turnaround supervisors, and new engineers and technicians working in piping construction and maintenance. It is particularly valuable for professionals in refineries, petrochemical and chemical plants, oil and gas production and processing facilities, power and desalination plants, and industrial facilities, as well as engineering, procurement, and construction contractors, piping fabrication shops, and maintenance contractors.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how fabrication quality affects safety, cost, and schedule.
  • Identify piping components and specifications correctly.
  • Read and interpret piping drawings and isometrics accurately.
  • Use measuring and layout tools with precision.
  • Calculate cut lengths, offsets, and branch layouts.
  • Cut and bevel pipe correctly for welding.
  • Fit up joints with correct gaps and alignment.
  • Assemble spools that meet dimensional requirements.
  • Align flanges and tighten bolts in the correct sequence.
  • Maintain material traceability and cleanliness.
  • Inspect spools against tolerances before release.
  • Work safely during fabrication and installation.
