The Petroleum Project Economics & Risk Analysis Training Course equips professionals with the methods oil and gas companies use to evaluate upstream investments, from the first exploration well through appraisal, field development, and production to final abandonment. Upstream projects commit large sums years before first oil or gas, under deep uncertainty about reserves, prices, costs, and schedule, and the quality of each decision depends on how well the economics and the risks are understood. The course follows the project life cycle and shows where the key economic decisions are made and what information is available at each decision point. Participants build an upstream cash-flow model step by step, combining production profiles, oil and gas price assumptions, capital and operating expenditure, abandonment costs, and working capital. They examine, at concept level, how fiscal terms such as royalty, taxes, cost recovery, and profit sharing change the cash flows received by the contractor and the host government, without entering into contract law. The program then covers the main economic indicators, including net present value, internal rate of return, payback, profitability index, unit costs, and breakeven price, together with the pitfalls that produce misleading results, and the consistent treatment of inflation, real and nominal terms, discount rates, and the cost of capital. A central focus is risk and uncertainty. Participants apply deterministic sensitivity analysis with spider and tornado diagrams, build consistent scenarios, use expected monetary value and decision trees for exploration, appraisal, and development choices, run practical Monte Carlo analysis to produce probabilistic economic outcomes, and estimate the value of acquiring more information before committing capital. The course also introduces portfolio thinking, showing how to rank projects under capital constraints and how each project contributes to the value and risk of the whole portfolio. Through spreadsheet exercises, a field development case study, and a final investment workshop, participants learn to turn analysis into a clear, well-supported investment recommendation for management and investment committees. The course complements general capital budgeting and lender-side project finance programs by concentrating on the technical, fiscal, and risk features that make upstream petroleum economics distinctive.
