Course Overview

Effective personal protective equipment (PPE) selection and management is essential for protecting employees from workplace hazards, reducing occupational injuries, and maintaining compliance with health and safety requirements. Selecting unsuitable equipment, using it incorrectly, or failing to maintain it can expose workers to serious risks even when other safety controls are in place. This course provides a systematic approach to assessing workplace hazards, determining appropriate PPE requirements, and selecting equipment according to the nature of exposure, working conditions, and applicable standards. It covers respiratory protection, eye and face protection, hearing protection, protective clothing, gloves, safety footwear, and fall protection equipment, with emphasis on compatibility, fit, limitations, and correct use. Participants will also examine PPE procurement, inspection, maintenance, storage, replacement, user training, and recordkeeping. Through practical exercises and workplace scenarios, they will develop the skills to establish effective PPE management programmes, evaluate equipment suitability, identify deficiencies, and integrate PPE into a broader occupational health and safety management system.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify workplace hazards requiring personal protective equipment.
  • Conduct hazard assessments and determine appropriate PPE requirements.
  • Select PPE based on exposure risks, equipment performance, fit, and applicable standards.
  • Understand the capabilities and limitations of different PPE categories.
  • Apply correct procedures for PPE fitting, use, inspection, and removal.
  • Establish maintenance, cleaning, storage, and replacement requirements.
  • Evaluate PPE compatibility when multiple items are used simultaneously.
  • Develop PPE policies, procurement criteria, and equipment specifications.
  • Implement user training, inspection schedules, and documentation procedures.
  • Monitor PPE programme effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.

Who Should Attend

Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) professionals. Occupational safety officers and workplace safety supervisors. PPE programme coordinators and safety committee members. Procurement and warehouse personnel responsible for safety equipment. Industrial, construction, maintenance, and operations supervisors. Facilities managers and engineering personnel. Occupational health professionals and risk assessment specialists. Managers responsible for workplace safety and regulatory compliance.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify hazards and determine where PPE is required within the hierarchy of controls.
  • Match PPE types and specifications to specific workplace exposures.
  • Evaluate equipment certification, performance ratings, and manufacturer instructions.
  • Recognise incorrect fit, damage, incompatibility, and other PPE deficiencies.
  • Apply inspection and maintenance procedures for common PPE categories.
  • Develop procedures for equipment issue, replacement, storage, and traceability.
  • Establish PPE training and competency verification requirements.
  • Maintain records of assessments, inspections, training, and equipment replacement.
  • Assess PPE programme performance and recommend corrective actions.

  • Determining when PPE is necessary alongside other preventive controls.
  • Conducting workplace assessments and documenting PPE requirements.
  • Responsibilities of employers, supervisors, and equipment users.
  • Practical Exercise: Assess a simulated industrial worksite and prepare a hazard-based PPE requirements matrix.
Day 2

PPE Categories, Selection Criteria, and Standards

  • Respiratory protective equipment: filtering facepieces, respirators, and supplied-air systems.
  • Eye and face protection: safety glasses, goggles, and face shields.
  • Hearing protection: earplugs, earmuffs, and noise exposure considerations.
  • Protective gloves and clothing for mechanical, chemical, thermal, and biological hazards.
  • Safety footwear, head protection, and fall protection equipment.
  • Equipment ratings, certification, manufacturer specifications, and applicable standards.
  • Practical Exercise: Select appropriate PPE for different work tasks and justify each choice against the identified hazards and relevant requirements.
Day 3

PPE Fit, Use, Compatibility, and User Training

  • Correct donning, adjustment, use, removal, and disposal procedures.
  • Fit assessment and limitations of respiratory and other close-fitting protective equipment.
  • Respiratory fit testing and user seal checks where applicable.
  • Compatibility between helmets, eye protection, respirators, hearing protection, and other equipment.
  • Common user errors, behavioural factors, and barriers to consistent PPE use.
  • Training methods, competency assessment, and reinforcement of safe practices.
  • Practical Exercise: Conduct a supervised PPE fitting and compatibility assessment using selected equipment and manufacturer instructions.
Day 4

PPE Inspection, Maintenance, Storage, and Procurement

  • Pre-use inspections and scheduled examination requirements.
  • Identifying damage, contamination, wear, and equipment failure indicators.
  • Cleaning, disinfection, maintenance, and safe storage procedures.
  • Service life, expiry dates, replacement criteria, and disposal of defective equipment.
  • Procurement specifications, supplier evaluation, and equipment standardisation.
