Course Overview

This advanced practical course provides a focused framework for identifying, assessing, and mitigating the most significant security risks affecting web applications. It uses the OWASP Top 10 as a foundation for understanding common application vulnerabilities and translating security principles into practical testing, development, and remediation activities. The programme covers critical web application security risks including broken access control, cryptographic failures, injection, insecure design, security misconfiguration, vulnerable and outdated components, authentication failures, software and data integrity failures, security logging and monitoring weaknesses, and server-side request forgery. Through practical vulnerability analysis, secure configuration exercises, application security testing, attack-scenario analysis, and remediation workshops, participants will develop the ability to recognise vulnerabilities, assess their impact, identify root causes, and implement appropriate security controls across web application environments.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyse the OWASP Top 10 and its role in modern web application security.
  • Identify common vulnerabilities affecting web applications and their underlying causes.
  • Assess broken access control and weaknesses in authentication and authorisation mechanisms.
  • Analyse injection vulnerabilities and insecure input-handling practices.
  • Evaluate cryptographic controls and identify weaknesses in the protection of sensitive data.
  • Assess insecure application design and identify security weaknesses at the architectural level.
  • Identify security misconfigurations across application, server, cloud, and deployment environments.
  • Evaluate risks associated with vulnerable and outdated software components.
  • Analyse software and data integrity risks within application development and deployment processes.
  • Assess security logging, monitoring, and detection capabilities.
  • Identify and evaluate server-side request forgery risks and appropriate mitigation controls.
  • Develop practical remediation and application security improvement strategies based on risk.

Who Should Attend

This programme is designed for application developers, software engineers, web developers, application security specialists, cybersecurity professionals, penetration testers, security engineers, and DevSecOps practitioners. It is also suitable for system architects, IT administrators, quality assurance professionals, technical leads, software testers, risk professionals, and managers responsible for application security, software development, or technology risk. The course is particularly relevant to organisations developing or managing web applications, APIs, digital platforms, e-commerce systems, customer portals, enterprise applications, and cloud-based services.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the structure and security significance of the OWASP Top 10.
  • Identify and classify common web application vulnerabilities.
  • Analyse access-control weaknesses and authentication-related security risks.
  • Detect injection vulnerabilities and evaluate their potential impact.
  • Assess cryptographic implementations and sensitive-data protection mechanisms.
  • Evaluate application designs for security weaknesses and architectural risks.
  • Identify and remediate common security misconfigurations.
  • Assess risks associated with vulnerable third-party components and dependencies.
  • Evaluate software and data integrity controls across application environments.
  • Assess the effectiveness of security logging and monitoring mechanisms.
  • Identify SSRF attack conditions and appropriate defensive controls.
  • Develop practical vulnerability remediation and web application security improvement plans.
