Course Overview

This advanced practical course provides a comprehensive framework for assessing occupational noise and vibration exposures and implementing effective hearing conservation and vibration risk control programs. It focuses on the measurement, analysis, interpretation, and management of workplace exposure risks across industrial and high-noise environments. Participants will examine occupational noise sources, exposure characteristics, sound measurement principles, frequency analysis, personal noise monitoring, and exposure assessment. The course also addresses hand-arm and whole-body vibration, including exposure pathways, measurement approaches, health effects, and risk factors associated with equipment, tools, vehicles, and industrial machinery. The program develops practical capabilities in interpreting measurement results against applicable occupational exposure limits, identifying high-risk tasks and worker groups, evaluating existing engineering and administrative controls, and selecting appropriate hearing protection. It also covers audiometric surveillance and the key elements required to establish an effective hearing conservation program. Practical exercises enable participants to develop noise and vibration assessment strategies, analyze field measurement data, prioritize exposure risks, evaluate control effectiveness, and prepare integrated action plans for reducing occupational exposure.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the principles of occupational noise and vibration exposure.
  • Identify major workplace sources and exposure pathways for noise and vibration.
  • Assess personal and area noise exposure using appropriate measurement techniques.
  • Apply sound level, frequency, and exposure concepts to workplace assessments.
  • Evaluate hand-arm and whole-body vibration exposure conditions.
  • Select appropriate instruments and methods for noise and vibration monitoring.
  • Interpret exposure measurements against applicable occupational exposure limits.
  • Identify workers, tasks, and areas requiring priority intervention.
  • Evaluate engineering, administrative, and personal protective controls.
  • Develop effective hearing conservation and vibration risk control strategies.
  • Assess the effectiveness of audiometric surveillance and hearing protection programs.
  • Establish practical monitoring, corrective action, and continuous improvement plans.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for industrial hygienists, occupational health professionals, HSE and EHS specialists, safety engineers, environmental health professionals, and personnel responsible for workplace exposure monitoring and occupational health protection. It is also suitable for plant and operations managers, maintenance and reliability professionals, engineering specialists, supervisors, occupational physicians, and personnel responsible for machinery, tools, vehicles, and high-noise industrial environments. The program is particularly relevant to professionals working in oil and gas, petrochemicals, manufacturing, mining, construction, power generation, utilities, transportation, heavy industry, and other workplaces where noise and vibration exposure require systematic assessment and control.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify significant occupational noise and vibration sources.
  • Determine worker groups and tasks requiring exposure assessment.
  • Design personal and area noise monitoring strategies.
  • Select suitable noise measurement instruments and sampling methods.
  • Interpret sound level, frequency, and time-weighted exposure data.
  • Assess hand-arm and whole-body vibration exposure.
  • Evaluate exposure results against applicable occupational exposure limits.
  • Analyze exposure patterns and identify high-risk tasks and work areas.
  • Select appropriate engineering and administrative controls.
  • Evaluate hearing protection based on workplace exposure and operational conditions.
  • Assess audiometric surveillance results and hearing conservation program performance.
  • Develop integrated noise and vibration control plans with monitoring and improvement measures.
