Course Overview

This course provides a practical approach to implementing the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) 2.0 to identify, assess, prioritize, and manage cybersecurity risks. Day 1

NIST CSF 2.0 Fundamentals and Organizational Context

  • Purpose, scope, and structure of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework.
  • Key concepts: functions, categories, subcategories, and cybersecurity outcomes.
  • Understanding the six functions: Govern, Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover.
  • CSF 2.0 governance emphasis and its relationship with enterprise risk management.
  • Defining organizational objectives, critical services, assets, and stakeholders.
  • Understanding risk exposure, business priorities, and implementation scope.
  • Using CSF 2.0 alongside existing security standards and risk management practices.
  • Practical exercise: Define the scope and business context for a CSF implementation initiative.
Day 2

Governance, Risk Assessment, and Current Profile Development

  • Establishing cybersecurity governance structures and accountability.
  • Defining policies, oversight responsibilities, risk appetite, and reporting requirements.
  • Identifying critical assets, information systems, dependencies, and third-party exposures.
  • Assessing cybersecurity risks and their potential business impact.
  • Mapping existing policies, controls, and practices to relevant CSF outcomes.
  • Collecting evidence through document reviews, interviews, and control assessments.
  • Developing a current profile to describe existing cybersecurity outcomes.
  • Practical exercise: Build a current CSF profile using a sample organizational environment and available assessment evidence.
Day 3

Gap Assessment and Target Profile Development

  • Comparing current cybersecurity outcomes with organizational requirements.
  • Identifying control gaps, governance weaknesses, and capability limitations.
  • Defining target outcomes based on risk priorities and business objectives.
  • Developing a target profile aligned with critical services and risk tolerance.
  • Prioritizing gaps by severity, business impact, feasibility, and dependencies.
  • Identifying quick wins and longer-term improvement requirements.
  • Documenting assumptions, evidence limitations, and residual risks.
  • Practical exercise: Complete a gap assessment and produce a prioritized list of improvement actions.
Day 4

Implementation Planning and Risk-Based Improvement

  • Translating assessment findings into defined improvement initiatives.
  • Assigning accountable owners, resources, timelines, and dependencies.
  • Integrating cybersecurity improvements into enterprise risk management and project governance.
  • Selecting appropriate technical, administrative, and operational measures.
  • Addressing governance, identity and access management, asset protection, monitoring, incident response, and recovery.
  • Defining implementation milestones, risk acceptance criteria, and escalation processes.
  • Establishing progress tracking and management reporting.
  • Practical exercise: Develop an implementation plan that links identified gaps to actions, owners, deadlines, and expected outcomes.
Day 5

Performance Measurement, Validation, and Continuous Improvement

  • Defining key performance indicators and risk indicators for CSF implementation.
  • Measuring progress against target outcomes and implementation milestones.
  • Reviewing evidence of control effectiveness and documenting unresolved gaps.
  • Establishing management reporting and periodic profile reviews.
  • Integrating lessons learned from incidents, audits, and risk assessments.
  • Updating priorities in response to changes in threats, technology, and business operations.
  • Maintaining accountability for ongoing cybersecurity improvement.
  • Final workshop: Present a CSF 2.0 implementation roadmap covering current and target profiles, prioritized gaps, improvement actions, responsibilities, timelines, performance indicators, and review arrangements.
