Course Overview

The Next-Generation Satellite Networks: HTS, LEO & Multi-Orbit Systems Training Course equips engineers, network architects, technical managers, and decision makers with a clear understanding of the new generation of satellite technologies and how to evaluate, design, and integrate them into modern communication networks. High-throughput satellites, software-defined payloads, low Earth orbit broadband constellations, medium Earth orbit systems, and multi-orbit architectures are transforming satellite communications by delivering higher capacity, lower latency, lower cost per bit, and greater flexibility. These developments are creating new opportunities for government networks, cellular backhaul, enterprise and banking connectivity, maritime and aviation services, energy and industrial sites, emergency response, and direct connectivity to mobile devices. At the same time, the rapid pace of change makes it difficult for organizations to understand which technologies are mature, how they compare, and how to integrate them with existing satellite and terrestrial infrastructure. Differences in coverage, capacity, latency, terminal types, service models, regulatory requirements, security, and resilience can have major implications for performance and cost. Organizations may select services based on headline speeds rather than application requirements, underestimate integration and operational challenges, or miss opportunities to combine orbits and networks for greater resilience. This course provides a structured, vendor-neutral view of next-generation satellite networks. Participants learn how satellite communications have evolved and the architecture and performance characteristics of high-throughput and very high-throughput satellites, including spot beams, frequency reuse, gateway design, and capacity density. The program covers software-defined and flexible payloads, beam hopping, on-board processing, and optical inter-satellite links, followed by the architecture of low Earth orbit broadband constellations and medium Earth orbit systems, including user terminals, electronically steered and flat-panel antennas, gateways, handovers, and latency. Participants then explore multi-orbit and hybrid network design combining geostationary, medium Earth orbit, low Earth orbit, and terrestrial connectivity through SD-WAN, orchestration, and policy-based routing, as well as ground segment virtualization and cloud-based ground infrastructure. The course also addresses 5G non-terrestrial networks and direct-to-device satellite connectivity, service and commercial models, regulatory considerations including coexistence between geostationary and non-geostationary systems and landing rights, security and resilience, space sustainability and orbital debris considerations, performance measurement, provider evaluation and procurement, and planning a migration roadmap. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with architecture comparison exercises, capacity and performance estimation, multi-orbit design workshops, and case studies. Participants leave with a next-generation satellite technology comparison matrix, an application requirements and service selection framework, a capacity and performance estimation model, a multi-orbit network architecture design, a provider evaluation checklist, and a migration and adoption roadmap for their organization.

Learning Objectives

  • Evaluate high-throughput and very high-throughput satellite architectures, including spot beams, frequency reuse, gateways, and capacity density.
  • Assess software-defined and flexible payloads, beam hopping, on-board processing, and optical inter-satellite links and their impact on network flexibility.
  • Analyze low Earth orbit and medium Earth orbit constellation architectures, including user terminals, gateways, inter-satellite links, handovers, and latency.
  • Evaluate electronically steered and flat-panel antennas and next-generation user terminals for fixed, maritime, aviation, land mobile, and government applications.
  • Design multi-orbit and hybrid networks that combine geostationary, medium Earth orbit, low Earth orbit, and terrestrial connectivity using SD-WAN, orchestration, and policy-based routing.
  • Assess ground segment virtualization, virtualized modems, and cloud-based ground infrastructure.
  • Evaluate 5G non-terrestrial network standards and direct-to-device satellite connectivity and their implications for mobile operators and users.
  • Estimate capacity, throughput, latency, availability, and cost per bit for different satellite options based on application requirements.
  • Assess regulatory, security, resilience, and space sustainability considerations for next-generation satellite networks.
  • Develop provider evaluation criteria and service level requirements for next-generation satellite services.
  • Design a migration and adoption roadmap for next-generation satellite networks in the participant's organization by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for satellite and RF engineers, network architects, telecommunications engineers, systems engineers, and technical managers involved in planning, designing, procuring, or operating satellite and hybrid networks. It is also highly relevant for IT and infrastructure managers responsible for connectivity to remote, mobile, or critical sites, network operations center staff, product and service managers in telecommunications and satellite organizations, and strategy and business development professionals evaluating new satellite services. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries, government entities, regulators, and public safety and defense organizations planning secure, resilient, and national connectivity programs; in telecommunications operators and satellite service providers integrating satellite into mobile and fixed networks; in banks and financial institutions using satellite for branch connectivity and business continuity; and in energy, utilities, oil and gas, mining, maritime, and aviation organizations connecting remote and mobile operations. Procurement professionals and senior managers making investment and service decisions on satellite connectivity will also benefit from the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how next-generation satellite systems differ from traditional satellite networks.
  • Describe how high-throughput satellites achieve greater capacity and lower cost per bit.
  • Explain the role of flexible payloads, beam hopping, and optical inter-satellite links.
  • Compare geostationary, medium Earth orbit, and low Earth orbit options for specific applications.
  • Evaluate next-generation user terminals and antennas for different environments.
  • Design hybrid and multi-orbit networks that improve performance and resilience.
  • Assess the benefits and risks of virtualized and cloud-based ground segments.
  • Explain how 5G non-terrestrial networks and direct-to-device services work and where they fit.
