Course Overview

The Negotiation & Conflict Resolution for Project Managers Training Course equips project managers, programme managers, project engineers, and project team leaders with the practical skills, strategies, and confidence needed to negotiate effectively and resolve conflicts constructively throughout the project lifecycle. In government entities, ministries, public authorities, banks, healthcare systems, energy and utility companies, construction, engineering, infrastructure, and technology organizations, and large corporations, project managers constantly negotiate without formal authority: securing resources from functional managers, agreeing scope and priorities with sponsors and clients, managing changes and claims with contractors and suppliers, aligning stakeholders with competing interests, and resolving disagreements within teams. The quality of these negotiations and the way conflicts are handled have a direct impact on project cost, schedule, quality, relationships, and reputation. Many project managers are technically strong but less confident in negotiation and conflict situations. They may concede too quickly to avoid confrontation, take rigid positions that damage relationships, or enter negotiations without adequate preparation, clear objectives, or alternatives. Discussions with contractors about variations, extensions of time, and claims may become adversarial, disagreements with sponsors about scope and deadlines may be avoided until they become crises, and conflicts within project teams or between departments may be ignored or escalated unnecessarily. Cultural differences, hierarchy, and emotions can further complicate negotiations and conflict resolution in multinational and multi-organization projects. This course provides a structured and practical approach to negotiation and conflict resolution tailored to the realities of project management, informed by established negotiation research, principled negotiation methods, and recognized conflict management models. Participants learn the common negotiation situations project managers face, the differences between competitive and collaborative negotiation, and core concepts including interests versus positions, best alternatives to a negotiated agreement, reservation points, zones of possible agreement, anchoring, and objective criteria. The program covers systematic negotiation preparation, creating options for mutual gain, persuasion and influence principles, effective questioning and active listening, managing emotions and pressure, understanding and using sources of power, multi-party negotiations, and cross-cultural negotiation. Participants then apply these skills to specific project negotiations, including resource negotiations with functional managers, scope, schedule, and budget negotiations with sponsors and clients, and negotiations with contractors and suppliers on variations, extensions of time, claims, and commercial terms. The course also addresses the sources of conflict in projects, conflict handling styles, structured conflict resolution processes, facilitating and mediating disputes, managing difficult conversations, resolving team and interdepartmental conflicts, escalation and dispute avoidance mechanisms, and ethical conduct in negotiation. The course is delivered through an interactive, experiential approach with extensive negotiation role plays and simulations based on realistic project scenarios, conflict resolution exercises, self-assessments, and feedback. Participants leave with a negotiation preparation planner, a BATNA and zone of agreement analysis tool, a project negotiation scenarios guide, a contractor variation and claims negotiation checklist, a conflict style self-assessment, a conflict resolution and mediation process guide, a difficult conversations framework, and a personal negotiation and conflict management development plan.
