The Maritime Law, Charterparties & Bills of Lading for Managers Training Course equips commercial, chartering, shipping, and legal support managers with a practical understanding of the legal framework behind the carriage of goods by sea. Trade in the Gulf and Africa depends heavily on chartered tonnage and containerized liner services, and many costly disputes begin with a clause nobody read closely, a bill of lading issued carelessly, or a claim handled too late. Managers do not need to become lawyers, but they do need to recognize risk and know when to seek advice. The course explains how maritime law is organized and how contracts allocate risk between owners, charterers, shippers, carriers, and receivers. Participants examine the sources of maritime law, including international conventions, national law, and arbitration practice; the main types of charter; and widely used standard forms such as GENCON and NYPE. They review voyage charter issues such as laytime and demurrage, time charter issues such as off-hire, speed and consumption, employment orders, and safe port and berth warranties. The three functions of the bill of lading receive close attention: receipt, evidence of the contract, and document of title. Participants study the Hague-Visby, Hamburg, and Rotterdam Rules as models of carrier liability, clean and claused bills, delivery without original documents, letters of indemnity, sea waybills, and electronic trade documents. Cargo claims, general average, salvage, ship arrest, limitation of liability, P&I cover, sanctions clauses, and dispute resolution complete the scope. The course is delivered through case studies, clause reviews, document exercises, claim scenarios, and a final dispute workshop. It builds managerial awareness and does not replace legal advice or provide a legal qualification. Participants leave with a charterparty review checklist, a bill of lading control checklist, a laytime and demurrage summary, a claims handling procedure, and a maritime contract risk matrix they can adapt to their own organization.
