Course Overview

The Marine Loading Arms Operation & Maintenance Training Course equips terminal operators, jetty supervisors, and maintenance personnel with the practical knowledge needed to operate, inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot marine loading arms safely and reliably. Marine loading arms are critical interfaces between ships and shore at crude oil, refined product, LPG, LNG, and chemical terminals. Their failure or incorrect operation can result in spills, fires, vessel delays, damage to ships and jetty equipment, and serious safety and environmental incidents. The course covers marine loading arms from design principles to emergency response and maintenance, informed by recognized industry guidance on loading arm design, tanker and terminal safety, and LNG transfer systems. Participants learn loading arm applications and types, key components such as risers, inboard and outboard arms, swivel joints, counterweights, quick connect and disconnect couplers, emergency release systems, hydraulic power units, control systems, and position monitoring systems, and the concept of the operating envelope. The program then addresses pre-operational checks, ship-shore safety coordination, connection, leak testing, purging and cooldown, transfer monitoring, disconnection, draining, and stowing, as well as emergency shutdown and emergency release operations, electrical isolation and static control, and weather and vessel movement limits. Participants also develop skills in preventive and predictive maintenance of swivels, seals, bearings, hydraulics, couplers, and emergency release systems, counterweight balancing, structural and corrosion inspection, troubleshooting, and maintenance records and spare parts management. The course is delivered through equipment schematics, operating procedure walkthroughs, case studies of loading arm incidents, and maintenance and troubleshooting exercises. Participants leave with a loading arm pre-operation and connection checklist, an operating envelope and alarm guide, an emergency release system test checklist, a preventive maintenance plan template, and a troubleshooting guide.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the role of marine loading arms in terminal operations and the consequences of loading arm failures on Day 1.
  • Identify loading arm types and applications for crude oil, refined products, LPG, LNG, and chemicals.
  • Describe loading arm components, including risers, inboard and outboard arms, swivel joints, counterweights, couplers, emergency release systems, hydraulic power units, and control and position monitoring systems.
  • Apply recognized industry guidance on loading arm design, tanker and terminal safety, and LNG transfer systems.
  • Explain the loading arm operating envelope, alarm zones, and the effects of vessel movement, tides, and weather.
  • Apply pre-operational checks and ship-shore safety coordination before connection.
  • Carry out safe connection, alignment, leak testing, purging, cooldown, transfer monitoring, disconnection, draining, and stowing.
  • Apply emergency shutdown and emergency release procedures and test emergency release systems safely.
  • Apply electrical isolation, static control, and fire and spill prevention measures during loading and unloading.
  • Plan and execute preventive and predictive maintenance of swivels, seals, bearings, hydraulic systems, couplers, and emergency release systems.
  • Perform counterweight balancing and structural, corrosion, and coating inspections.
  • Troubleshoot common loading arm problems and manage maintenance records, spare parts, and manufacturer support by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for terminal and jetty operators, loading masters, jetty supervisors, and marine terminal managers responsible for loading and unloading operations. It is also relevant for mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical maintenance engineers and technicians, maintenance planners, HSE professionals, and marine and port operations personnel supporting ship-shore transfer activities. It is particularly valuable for professionals in crude oil and product export terminals, refineries and petrochemical plants with marine jetties, LPG and LNG export and import terminals, chemical terminals, port authorities, and terminal operation and maintenance contractors.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how marine loading arms work and why they are critical safety equipment.
  • Identify the main loading arm types and components.
  • Understand and respect the loading arm operating envelope.
  • Carry out thorough pre-operational checks.
  • Connect, operate, and disconnect loading arms safely.
  • Respond correctly to alarms, emergency shutdowns, and emergency releases.
  • Prevent ignition, static, and spill hazards during transfers.
  • Maintain swivels, seals, hydraulics, couplers, and emergency release systems.
  • Balance counterweights and inspect structures for damage and corrosion.
  • Diagnose and correct common loading arm faults.
  • Plan maintenance and manage spare parts effectively.
  • Contribute to safe and reliable terminal operations.
