The Managing Uncertainty & Decision-Making in Complex Projects Training Course equips project leaders, sponsors, program managers, and senior professionals with the mindset, frameworks, and practical tools needed to lead complex projects and make sound decisions when information is incomplete, conditions are changing, and outcomes cannot be predicted with confidence. In government entities, ministries, public authorities, banks, healthcare systems, energy and utility companies, infrastructure, technology, and transformation programs, and large corporations, many of the most important initiatives are not simply complicated, but complex. They involve multiple stakeholders with differing interests, new technologies, interdependent systems, long timeframes, and political, regulatory, and market uncertainty. Traditional project management approaches assume that scope can be defined upfront, risks can be listed and scored, and plans can be followed with minor adjustments. In complex projects, these assumptions often break down. Decisions may be based on optimistic forecasts, early commitments may lock projects into inflexible paths, weak signals of trouble may be ignored, and cognitive biases such as overconfidence, anchoring, confirmation bias, sunk cost thinking, and groupthink may distort judgment. Governance may demand certainty that does not exist, while teams may hesitate to raise concerns. As a result, organizations may persist with failing courses of action or miss opportunities to adapt. This course provides a practical approach to understanding and managing uncertainty and complexity in projects and making better decisions under uncertainty. Participants learn to distinguish between simple, complicated, complex, and chaotic situations using sense-making frameworks such as Cynefin, understand different types of uncertainty, including variability, knowledge gaps, unknown unknowns, and ambiguity, and diagnose the sources of complexity in their own projects. The program covers decision-making models, the influence of cognitive biases and organizational dynamics on decisions, and techniques to improve judgment, including reference class forecasting, premortems, red teaming, and structured group decision methods. Participants also learn scenario planning, real options thinking to preserve flexibility, adaptive and iterative delivery strategies, decision analysis including decision trees, multi-criteria analysis, and the value of information, robust decision-making for deep uncertainty, detection of early warning signals, governance and decision rights suited to complex projects, stakeholder and political dynamics, leadership and psychological safety in uncertain environments, communicating uncertainty to decision makers, and building learning and resilience into projects. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with complex project case studies, decision simulations, group exercises, and reflection on participants' own projects. Participants leave with a project complexity assessment tool, an uncertainty mapping framework, a bias check and premortem guide, a scenario planning template, a real options and decision analysis worksheet, an early warning indicator framework, and a decision governance and learning plan for a complex project.
