Course Overview

This course provides practical knowledge and skills for identifying, assessing, and managing major accident hazards in high-risk industrial environments. It focuses on understanding major accident scenarios, evaluating the potential consequences of loss of control, and establishing effective measures to prevent serious incidents involving fires, explosions, hazardous substance releases, and other catastrophic events. Participants examine major accident hazard identification, risk assessment, prevention strategies, safety-critical elements, barrier management, and emergency preparedness. The programme also addresses the relationship between process safety management, asset integrity, operational control, management of change, and regulatory compliance in preventing major accidents. Practical exercises enable participants to assess major accident scenarios, evaluate the effectiveness of preventive and mitigative safeguards, identify weaknesses in critical controls, and develop structured risk reduction plans that support operational safety and business continuity.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the principles and significance of major accident hazard management.
  • Identify major accident hazards and develop credible accident scenarios.
  • Assess the likelihood and potential consequences of major industrial incidents.
  • Apply appropriate hazard identification and risk assessment techniques.
  • Evaluate preventive and mitigative barriers used to control major accident risks.
  • Identify safety-critical elements and establish appropriate performance requirements.
  • Integrate major accident hazard management into operational procedures and process safety systems.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for HSE managers, process safety engineers, operations managers, risk management specialists, asset integrity engineers, maintenance managers, emergency response coordinators, safety officers, and professionals responsible for controlling major accident hazards. It is particularly relevant to oil and gas companies, refineries, petrochemical plants, chemical manufacturing facilities, offshore installations, power generation facilities, storage terminals, and other high-hazard industries where major incidents could result in serious injuries, fatalities, environmental damage, asset losses, or significant business disruption.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify major accident hazards associated with industrial activities and hazardous installations.
  • Develop credible major accident scenarios based on hazardous conditions and potential loss-of-control events.
  • Evaluate accident likelihood, severity, and potential consequences.
  • Apply hazard identification and risk assessment methods to major accident prevention.
  • Identify safety-critical barriers and evaluate their effectiveness and reliability.
  • Establish performance standards and monitoring requirements for safety-critical elements.
  • Assess the influence of equipment failure, human error, and organizational factors on major accident risks.
  • Integrate risk control measures into operational activities, maintenance, and management of change.
  • Develop emergency response strategies for major accident scenarios.
  • Interpret risk assessment findings and translate them into practical control measures.
  • Monitor leading and lagging safety indicators to evaluate risk control performance.
  • Prepare a major accident hazard management and improvement plan.
