Course Overview

The Maintenance Manager Professional (CMM Exam Preparation) Training Course equips maintenance managers, supervisors, engineers, and planners with a structured review of the maintenance management body of knowledge and the exam practice needed to prepare with confidence for the Certified Maintenance Manager (CMM) examination, while strengthening their ability to lead effective maintenance organizations. In oil and gas, petrochemicals, power, water and utilities, manufacturing, mining, transport, facilities management, and government asset-owning organizations, maintenance managers are responsible for asset availability, safety, cost, and workforce performance. A recognized professional credential demonstrates broad competence across the technical, managerial, and business dimensions of maintenance. The course reviews the core domains of maintenance management in an integrated way. Participants cover maintenance strategy and organization, maintenance types and approaches, including preventive, predictive, reliability-centered, and total productive maintenance, and work management from work identification through planning, scheduling, execution, and closeout. The program then addresses computerized maintenance management systems, spare parts and inventory management, reliability fundamentals and failure analysis, condition monitoring, maintenance performance measurement and benchmarking, budgeting and cost control, contractor management, workforce management and competence development, maintenance safety, shutdowns and turnarounds, asset management principles, leadership, and continuous improvement. Throughout the course, participants practice exam-style questions, apply exam techniques, and complete a full practice exam with detailed review and a personal performance analysis. The course is delivered through concise concept reviews, maintenance management case studies, calculation exercises, domain-based practice questions, and a mock exam. Participants leave with a domain-by-domain study guide, a maintenance management formulas and KPIs reference, a bank of practice questions, a personal study plan, and a mock exam performance analysis. Eligibility requirements, exam content, and exam format are set by the certifying body and should be confirmed directly with it.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the structure and domains of the CMM examination and develop a personal exam preparation plan on Day 1.
  • Apply maintenance strategy and organization principles, including aligning maintenance with business objectives and designing maintenance organizations.
  • Compare maintenance approaches, including reactive, preventive, predictive, proactive, reliability-centered, and total productive maintenance.
  • Apply work management processes, including work identification, prioritization, planning, scheduling, execution, closeout, and backlog management.
  • Explain the role and effective use of computerized maintenance management systems and maintenance data.
  • Apply spare parts and MRO inventory management principles, including criticality, stocking policies, and inventory optimization.
  • Apply reliability fundamentals, including failure patterns, availability, mean time between failures, mean time to repair, failure modes and effects analysis, and root cause analysis.
  • Explain condition monitoring technologies and their application in predictive maintenance programs.
  • Measure maintenance performance using key performance indicators and benchmarking.
  • Apply maintenance budgeting, cost control, life cycle costing, and contractor management practices.
  • Apply workforce management, competence development, maintenance safety, and shutdown and turnaround management principles.
  • Apply asset management, leadership, and continuous improvement principles and demonstrate exam readiness through a full practice exam by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for maintenance managers, maintenance superintendents and supervisors, maintenance and reliability engineers, and maintenance planners who plan to pursue the CMM certification or want a comprehensive, structured review of maintenance management. It is also relevant for asset managers, facilities managers, engineering managers with maintenance responsibilities, and professionals preparing to move into maintenance leadership roles. It is particularly valuable for professionals in oil and gas, refining, petrochemical, and fertilizer plants; in power generation, water, and desalination utilities; in manufacturing, mining, cement, steel, and aluminum facilities; in airports, ports, rail, and transport operators; in facilities management organizations; and in ministries, municipalities, and government entities responsible for maintaining public assets.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain the CMM exam structure and domains and follow a clear study plan.
  • Align maintenance strategy and organization with business goals.
  • Select appropriate maintenance approaches for different assets.
  • Apply effective work planning, scheduling, and backlog management.
  • Use maintenance systems and data to support decisions.
  • Manage spare parts and inventory to balance availability and cost.
  • Apply reliability concepts and failure analysis techniques.
  • Explain how condition monitoring supports predictive maintenance.
  • Measure and benchmark maintenance performance.
  • Manage maintenance budgets, costs, and contractors.
  • Lead maintenance teams safely and develop their competence.
