The Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) & Hazardous Energy Control Training Course provides comprehensive knowledge and practical skills for identifying, isolating, and controlling hazardous energy sources during maintenance, servicing, inspection, and repair activities. The programme focuses on preventing unexpected equipment startup, accidental energization, and the uncontrolled release of stored energy that may expose workers to serious injuries, fatalities, and equipment damage. Hazardous energy control is a fundamental component of occupational health and safety in industrial facilities, manufacturing plants, oil and gas installations, power generation facilities, utilities, and maintenance operations. Equipment may contain multiple energy sources, including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, thermal, chemical, and gravitational energy. This course examines how these sources can be identified, isolated, dissipated, and verified before work begins, ensuring that equipment remains in a safe condition throughout maintenance activities. The programme explores the principles and procedures of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), including energy source identification, equipment isolation, lock and tag application, stored energy control, zero-energy verification, and controlled equipment reinstatement. Participants examine the responsibilities of authorized employees, affected employees, supervisors, and contractors, as well as the importance of equipment-specific isolation procedures, clear communication, and accurate documentation. Particular attention is given to complex equipment, multiple energy sources, group lockout arrangements, and situations involving shift changes or simultaneous maintenance activities. The course also addresses the management of hazardous energy during non-routine maintenance, troubleshooting, equipment testing, and work involving contractors. Participants explore the limitations of warning tags, the correct use of personal and group lockout devices, temporary removal of isolation controls when testing is necessary, and the procedures required before returning equipment to service. Practical scenarios highlight common failures, including incomplete isolation, incorrect identification of energy sources, inadequate dissipation of stored energy, and failure to verify the effectiveness of isolation. Through practical exercises, equipment isolation scenarios, risk assessments, and procedural reviews, participants develop a structured approach to implementing and monitoring hazardous energy control programmes. The course emphasizes procedural compliance, worker competency, supervision, communication, and continuous improvement. It is designed to help organizations reduce energy-related incidents, strengthen maintenance safety, improve operational discipline, and establish reliable Lockout/Tagout practices across their facilities.
