Course Overview

The Legal Writing & Drafting Legal Memoranda Training Course equips legal advisors, in-house counsel, government legal affairs professionals, lawyers, and compliance professionals with the skills needed to research, analyze, and write clear, accurate, and persuasive legal memoranda, opinions, and correspondence that support sound decisions. In ministries, government entities, regulators, banks, energy and utility companies, and corporations, legal teams are constantly asked to advise leadership on contracts, disputes, regulatory obligations, investigations, and policy decisions. Legal advice that is unclear, poorly structured, overly long, or insufficiently reasoned can mislead decision makers, delay action, and expose the organization to legal and reputational risk, while well-written memoranda translate complex legal issues into clear conclusions and practical recommendations. The course covers legal writing from principles to polished deliverables. Participants learn the principles of effective legal writing, including clarity, precision, concision, plain legal language, consistent terminology, and reader focus, and how to plan and structure legal documents. The program then addresses the structure and components of legal memoranda, including the question presented, brief answer, statement of facts, analysis, and conclusions and recommendations, analytical frameworks for legal reasoning, legal research and use of legislation, regulations, judicial precedents, and administrative decisions, statutory interpretation, and the distinction between objective and persuasive writing. Participants also examine writing legal opinions and advice for senior management and boards, executive summaries and risk-rated advice, persuasive submissions, legal correspondence, notices, demand letters, and responses to regulators, bilingual drafting and legal translation pitfalls, editing and proofreading, confidentiality and professional ethics, and the responsible use of AI tools in legal writing, including verifying sources and citations. The course is delivered through intensive writing workshops, analysis of sample memoranda, rewriting exercises, peer review, and individual feedback on participants' drafts. Participants leave with a legal memorandum template, a legal opinion and executive summary template, a legal analysis framework guide, a legal correspondence template set, and a legal writing editing checklist.
