Course Overview

The Lean Supply Chain Management Training Course equips supply chain, operations, procurement, and logistics professionals with the principles, tools, and practical methods of lean thinking to eliminate waste, shorten lead times, improve flow, and deliver greater value across the end-to-end supply chain. In government entities, ministries, healthcare systems, banks, manufacturing, retail, and distribution companies, and large corporations, supply chains often contain hidden waste in the form of excess inventory, waiting, unnecessary movement, rework, duplicated approvals, and poorly coordinated handovers. Lean supply chain management provides a proven, structured way to identify and remove this waste while improving service quality, responsiveness, and cost. Many organizations attempt lean improvements in isolated areas, such as a single warehouse or process, without connecting them to the wider supply chain. Improvements may focus on tools rather than on the flow of value to the end user, reductions in inventory may be made without addressing the variability and delays that caused it, and gains may fade because standard work, visual management, and leadership routines are not put in place. Organizations also need to balance lean efficiency with resilience, ensuring that the pursuit of leanness does not create unacceptable exposure to supply disruption. This course provides a practical, end-to-end approach to lean supply chain management. Participants learn the core lean principles of value, value stream, flow, pull, and continuous improvement, and how to identify the eight types of waste across supply chain processes. The program covers value stream mapping of current and future state supply chains, lead time and process cycle efficiency analysis, pull systems and kanban replenishment, demand leveling, takt time, and flow improvement. It also addresses lean procurement and supplier development, lean inventory management, lean warehousing and logistics, lean practices in service and administrative supply chain processes, standard work, 5S, visual management, error proofing, structured problem solving using PDCA, A3, and root cause analysis, kaizen events, lean performance measurement, balancing lean and resilience, combining lean with digital tools, and building the leadership behaviors and culture required to sustain improvement. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with value stream mapping exercises, simulations, case studies, and improvement workshops. Participants leave with a current and future state value stream map, a waste identification checklist, a kanban sizing calculation, a 5S and visual management plan, an A3 problem-solving report, a lean KPI dashboard design, and a lean supply chain implementation roadmap for their organization.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the principles of lean thinking and their application to end-to-end supply chain management on Day 1.
  • Evaluate the participant's current supply chain processes and identify the main sources of waste, delay, and variability.
  • Apply the eight types of waste to systematically identify non-value-adding activities across procurement, inventory, warehousing, logistics, and administrative processes.
  • Develop current state and future state value stream maps for a selected supply chain flow.
  • Analyze lead time, value-added time, and process cycle efficiency to quantify improvement potential.
  • Design pull-based replenishment systems, including kanban, and calculate appropriate kanban quantities.
  • Apply demand leveling, takt time, and flow principles to reduce bottlenecks and stabilize supply chain operations.
  • Implement lean procurement and supplier development practices that improve supplier reliability, quality, and delivery performance.
  • Apply lean practices in warehousing and logistics, including 5S, visual management, standard work, and error proofing.
  • Apply structured problem-solving methods, including PDCA, A3 reports, five whys, and cause-and-effect analysis, to resolve recurring supply chain problems.
  • Evaluate the balance between lean efficiency and supply chain resilience and design appropriate buffers for critical items.
  • Design a lean KPI dashboard and lean supply chain implementation roadmap for the participant's organization by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for supply chain managers, operations managers, procurement and logistics managers, warehouse and inventory managers, planning managers, and team leaders responsible for improving the efficiency and reliability of supply chain processes. It is also highly relevant for continuous improvement and operational excellence professionals, lean practitioners, quality managers, and process improvement specialists leading improvement initiatives. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries and government entities seeking to streamline procurement, supply, and service delivery processes; in healthcare systems improving the flow of medicines and medical supplies to hospitals and clinics; in banks and financial institutions simplifying procurement, operational supply, and back-office processes; and in manufacturing, retail, consumer goods, utilities, construction, and service organizations pursuing cost reduction, shorter lead times, and higher service levels. Senior managers sponsoring operational excellence programs and finance professionals interested in working capital and efficiency will also benefit from the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain lean principles and how they apply to supply chains in both service and industrial settings.
  • Recognize the eight types of waste in their own supply chain processes.
  • Map a supply chain value stream and identify delays, bottlenecks, and non-value-adding steps.
  • Design a future state value stream with improved flow and shorter lead times.
  • Calculate lead time, value-added time, and process cycle efficiency.
  • Set up simple pull and kanban replenishment systems for suitable items.
  • Apply takt time and demand leveling concepts to stabilize workflows.
  • Work with suppliers to reduce variability, improve quality, and shorten lead times.
  • Implement 5S, visual management, and standard work in stores, warehouses, and offices.
  • Solve recurring problems using PDCA and A3 problem-solving methods.
  • Decide where buffers are needed to protect service and resilience while remaining lean.
  • Measure lean performance using indicators such as lead time, process cycle efficiency, inventory days, on-time in-full delivery, and first-time-right rate.
