Course Overview

Lean Six Sigma provides healthcare organizations with a structured methodology for improving patient safety, reducing process delays, minimizing errors, and enhancing the quality and efficiency of care delivery. By combining Lean principles for eliminating waste with Six Sigma techniques for reducing process variation, healthcare providers can improve patient outcomes, optimize resource utilization, and deliver more reliable services while maintaining clinical and regulatory requirements. This course explores the practical application of Lean Six Sigma across healthcare operations, including patient admission and discharge, outpatient services, emergency departments, clinical pathways, laboratory services, pharmacy operations, and administrative processes. Participants will examine the DMAIC methodology (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control), process mapping, root cause analysis, performance measurement, data-driven decision-making, and risk-based improvement. Particular emphasis is placed on adapting improvement methods to complex healthcare environments, where patient safety, clinical effectiveness, staff coordination, and continuity of care are critical. Through healthcare-focused case studies and practical exercises, participants will develop the skills to identify operational bottlenecks, investigate recurring errors, reduce waiting times, improve patient flow, and establish sustainable performance controls. The course equips healthcare leaders, quality professionals, clinical managers, and operational teams with practical tools to implement measurable improvements, strengthen patient-centred care, and support continuous improvement across healthcare services.

Learning Objectives

Course Outline

Day 1

Lean Six Sigma Fundamentals in Healthcare

  • Principles of Lean, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement in healthcare environments.
  • The relationship between process efficiency, patient safety, clinical quality, and patient experience.
  • Identifying the eight forms of waste in healthcare processes.
  • Understanding process variation, defects, rework, and avoidable delays.
  • Selecting improvement opportunities based on patient needs, operational priorities, and organizational risks.
  • Building a culture of quality improvement and multidisciplinary collaboration.
  • Practical Exercise: Analyse a healthcare service scenario and identify sources of waste, delays, and process inefficiency affecting patient care.
Day 2

Process Mapping, Measurement, and Healthcare Performance Analysis

  • Mapping patient journeys and clinical and administrative workflows.
  • Identifying bottlenecks, handoffs, duplicated activities, and unnecessary waiting.
  • Defining process boundaries, inputs, outputs, and measurable performance requirements.
  • Establishing baseline indicators for waiting times, throughput, turnaround times, and process reliability.
  • Collecting and validating operational data while respecting patient confidentiality.
  • Using process analysis and visual management tools to identify performance gaps.
  • Practical Exercise: Develop a current-state process map for a selected healthcare pathway and identify measurable indicators for its main stages.
Day 3

DMAIC, Root Cause Analysis, and Patient Safety

  • Applying the Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, and Control (DMAIC) methodology to healthcare projects.
  • Defining problem statements, project scope, objectives, and improvement measures.
  • Analysing process data to identify patterns, variation, and recurring failures.
  • Applying the 5 Whys, cause-and-effect diagrams, and Pareto analysis.
  • Investigating process-related incidents, medication workflow issues, and service delivery failures.
  • Integrating patient safety risks and clinical governance requirements into improvement decisions.
  • Practical Exercise: Investigate a simulated healthcare process failure, determine its likely root causes, and develop an evidence-based improvement proposal.
Day 4

Process Improvement and Patient Flow Optimization

  • Designing future-state workflows to improve access, coordination, and continuity of care.
  • Reducing waiting times in emergency departments, outpatient clinics, diagnostic services, and admission processes.
  • Applying Lean tools such as 5S, standard work, visual management, and waste reduction.
  • Improving resource allocation, staff coordination, and capacity utilization.
  • Evaluating proposed solutions through pilot testing and structured implementation.
