Land degradation and desertification erode soils, water security, biodiversity and rural livelihoods across the Gulf, the wider Middle East and Africa, and governments now treat restoration as a national priority. Large greening programs, however, often fail at the point of delivery: seedlings are planted on poorly diagnosed sites, species are chosen for appearance rather than survival, irrigation consumes scarce water, and success is reported as trees planted rather than land recovered. The Land Restoration, Afforestation & Desertification Program Management Training Course addresses that gap by focusing on how restoration programs are designed, delivered and proven on the ground. The course places restoration within its policy setting, including the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, the concept of Land Degradation Neutrality, the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative, and the role of national vegetation-cover and desertification authorities. Participants then learn to assess degradation using remote sensing and field diagnosis, prioritize sites by recovery potential, and select the right approach, from assisted natural regeneration to active planting, sand dune fixation and rangeland rehabilitation. Technical sessions cover native species selection, seed sourcing and nursery production, water harvesting, efficient establishment irrigation and the use of treated wastewater, followed by grazing management, the traditional hima system of protected rangelands, and community and partner programs that secure long-term care of restored land. Contracting, aftercare and quality control are treated as program management issues, because most failures occur after planting. The final part of the course builds a monitoring and evaluation framework that tracks survival, vegetation cover, biodiversity and carbon with credible methods, and links field results to national reporting. Through case studies, site diagnosis exercises and group workshops, participants prepare a restoration program delivery plan that they can adapt to their own agency, municipality or project.
