The Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) Design & Monitoring Training Course equips risk managers, enterprise risk management professionals, internal control and compliance officers, performance managers, and business leaders with the methods and tools needed to design, implement, and monitor key risk indicators that provide early warning of changes in risk exposure and support timely management action. In banks and financial institutions, government entities, ministries, public authorities, energy, oil and gas, and utility companies, healthcare systems, telecommunications providers, and large corporations, boards and senior management increasingly expect forward-looking risk information rather than retrospective reports of incidents and losses. Well-designed KRIs translate risk appetite into measurable limits, highlight emerging threats before they materialize, and focus attention on the risks that matter most. Many KRI programs do not achieve their purpose. Organizations may track large numbers of indicators that are easy to measure but have little predictive value, rely mainly on lagging measures that report problems after they occur, or confuse KRIs with performance indicators. Indicators may not be linked to specific risks, risk drivers, or risk appetite, thresholds may be set arbitrarily, data may be unreliable or delayed, and breaches may not trigger clear escalation and action. KRI reports may present long lists of red, amber, and green indicators without analysis of trends and underlying causes, and indicators may not be reviewed as risks and the organization change. This course provides a structured and practical approach to KRI design and monitoring, informed by recognized enterprise risk management frameworks and guidance on developing key risk indicators. Participants learn the purpose of KRIs and how they differ from key performance indicators and key control indicators, the characteristics of leading, current, and lagging indicators, and how KRIs connect to risk taxonomies, risk assessments, and risk appetite and tolerance. The program covers identifying KRIs from risk drivers and causes using techniques such as bow-tie and root cause analysis, applying selection criteria, and documenting KRIs in complete definition sheets covering purpose, formula, data source, frequency, ownership, and thresholds. Participants then learn methods for setting thresholds using risk appetite, historical data, statistical analysis, and benchmarks, managing data quality and governance, aggregating KRIs from process and business unit level to enterprise level, and designing reports and dashboards that highlight trends and actions. The course also addresses escalation and response procedures, KRIs for different risk categories, including strategic, operational, financial, compliance, cyber, third-party, health and safety, people, project, and environmental, social, and governance risks, reviewing and back-testing KRIs, using automation and analytics, avoiding common pitfalls, and embedding a sustainable KRI program. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with risk driver analysis, KRI design workshops, threshold setting exercises, dashboard design, escalation simulations, and case studies from different sectors. Participants leave with a KRI design framework, a KRI selection criteria checklist, a KRI definition sheet template, a threshold setting guide, a KRI data quality checklist, a KRI library of sample indicators by risk category, a KRI dashboard design, an escalation and response protocol, and a KRI program implementation plan.
