Course Overview

The IT Financial Management Training Course equips IT leaders, IT finance professionals, financial controllers, and procurement and governance professionals with the knowledge and practical tools needed to plan, account for, allocate, control, and optimize technology spending and to demonstrate the value of IT investments. Technology now represents a large and growing share of operating and capital budgets in government entities, ministries, banks, energy and utility companies, healthcare systems, telecommunications providers, and corporations, driven by digital transformation, cloud adoption, cybersecurity, software subscriptions, and AI. Yet many organizations lack transparency over what technology costs, who consumes it, and what value it delivers, which leads to budget overruns, uncontrolled cloud and license spending, difficult conversations between IT and finance, and weak investment decisions. The course covers IT financial management from budgeting to value demonstration. Participants learn the principles of IT financial management and its role in IT governance, recognized service financial management practices, and the classification of technology spending into capital and operating expenditure and into run, grow, and transform categories. The program then addresses IT budgeting and forecasting, building IT cost models using a recognized technology cost taxonomy, allocating costs to services, applications, and business units, calculating unit costs and service costs, and applying showback and chargeback models. Participants also examine cloud financial management and FinOps practices, software licensing and software asset management, vendor contract and cost optimization, IT business cases and investment appraisal including total cost of ownership, net present value, and return on investment, accounting considerations for software development, cloud, and software-as-a-service arrangements, benefits tracking, IT financial KPIs and benchmarking, and communicating technology costs and value to finance, business leaders, and boards. The course is delivered through practical IT cost modeling exercises, budgeting and forecasting workshops, cloud cost optimization case studies, business case development, and executive communication practice. Participants leave with an IT budget and forecast template, an IT cost model and allocation template, a service unit cost calculator, a cloud and license cost optimization checklist, and an IT business case and value tracking template.
