Course Overview

This course develops the knowledge and practical skills required to establish, implement, maintain, and improve laboratory management systems in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025. It focuses on the competence, impartiality, and consistent operation of testing and calibration laboratories, helping participants understand how the standard supports reliable results, technical confidence, and customer trust. The programme examines the standard's key requirements, including impartiality, confidentiality, personnel competence, facilities and environmental conditions, equipment management, metrological traceability, measurement uncertainty, method selection and validation, sampling, and the handling of test and calibration items. Participants also explore quality assurance of results, technical records, reporting requirements, and the management of nonconforming work. Through practical exercises and laboratory-based scenarios, participants learn how to interpret requirements, evaluate compliance, maintain documented information, manage risks, and prepare for internal assessments and accreditation activities. Emphasis is placed on technical competence, evidence-based decision-making, corrective action, and continuous improvement within laboratory operations.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the purpose, scope, and structure of ISO/IEC 17025 and its application to testing and calibration laboratories.
  • Interpret the management and technical requirements of the standard.
  • Establish procedures that support impartiality, confidentiality, and consistent laboratory operations.
  • Assess personnel competence and define authorization and training requirements.
  • Apply appropriate controls for equipment, facilities, environmental conditions, and metrological traceability.
