Course Overview

This training course treats psychosocial hazards as occupational health and safety risks to be identified, assessed and controlled through a management system, following ISO 45003, the international guidance on managing psychosocial risks within an ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management system. Rather than focusing on wellbeing culture or individual support, it equips participants to manage how work is designed, organized and supervised so that harm is prevented at source. The course explains the three groups of psychosocial hazards described in ISO 45003: how work is organized, social factors, and the work environment, equipment and hazardous tasks. Participants examine workload, work pace, role clarity, job control, working hours, organizational change, harassment and violence, and the particular exposures created by remote sites, isolated work and rotational schedules. Particular emphasis is placed on structured risk assessment, the hierarchy of controls applied to work design, worker consultation, and the integration of psychosocial risk into existing hazard identification, management of change and incident investigation processes. Through case studies, assessment exercises and implementation workshops, participants develop a practical psychosocial risk management plan with monitoring indicators, audit criteria and management review inputs.

Learning Objectives

  • By the end of this training course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain the purpose and scope of ISO 45003 and its link to ISO 45001.
  • Distinguish psychosocial hazards from psychosocial risks and their effects.
  • Identify psychosocial hazards arising from work organization, social factors and the work environment.
  • Combine organizational records and worker consultation to identify hazards reliably.
  • Assess psychosocial risks using likelihood, severity, exposure duration and interaction between hazards.
  • Prioritize psychosocial risks for workforce groups in remote, isolated and rotational operations.
  • Select controls for workload, working hours and rotation using the hierarchy of controls.
  • Establish procedures to prevent and respond to workplace harassment, bullying and violence.
  • Integrate psychosocial risk into management of change, contractor management and incident investigation.
  • Develop leading and lagging indicators to monitor psychosocial risk control performance.
  • Prepare a psychosocial risk management plan aligned with ISO 45001.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for HSE managers, occupational health and safety professionals, occupational health teams, HR leaders, and management system coordinators responsible for identifying and controlling work-related psychosocial risks. It is particularly suitable for HSE Managers, Occupational Health Advisors, Safety Engineers, HR and Employee Relations Managers, ISO 45001 Implementation Team Members, Internal Auditors, and Site and Camp Managers. It is also relevant to oil and gas, construction, mining, utilities, manufacturing, banking, ministries and government agencies, particularly organizations with remote sites, offshore facilities or rotational workforces. Senior managers and supervisors who design work, set staffing levels and approve schedules will benefit most.

Learning Outcomes

  • Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Interpret ISO 45003 guidance within an ISO 45001 management system.
  • Classify psychosocial hazards by work organization, social factors and work environment.
  • Plan hazard identification combining records, observation and confidential worker input.
  • Conduct a psychosocial risk assessment and record results in a risk register.
  • Evaluate how remote sites, isolation and rotation patterns affect psychosocial exposure.
  • Design work-level controls that reduce excessive demands, low job control and role conflict.
  • Define fatigue, lone-working and accommodation arrangements for remote workforces.
  • Apply clear reporting, investigation and protection arrangements for harassment and violence concerns.
  • Define manager responsibilities and referral routes without taking counselling or clinical roles.
  • Select indicators, audit criteria and management review inputs for psychosocial risk.
  • Present a prioritized psychosocial risk control plan with owners and monitoring.
