Course Overview

The Inventory Management & Control Training Course equips professionals with the principles, analytical tools, and control practices needed to keep the right items, in the right quantities, at the right time and cost. In government entities, ministries, banks, healthcare organizations, manufacturing companies, and large corporations, inventory represents a significant investment of funds and a direct influence on service delivery. Too little stock leads to shortages, delays, and disrupted operations, while too much stock ties up budgets, occupies storage space, and increases the risk of damage, expiry, and obsolescence. Effective inventory management balances availability, cost, and risk in a disciplined and measurable way. Many organizations manage inventory through habit rather than analysis. Reorder decisions may be based on intuition or past practice, every item may be managed with the same level of attention regardless of its value or criticality, safety stock may be set without reference to demand variability or supplier lead times, and slow-moving and obsolete items may accumulate unnoticed. On the control side, stock records may not match physical quantities, receiving and issuing procedures may be applied inconsistently, and weak segregation of duties may expose the organization to losses and audit findings. This course provides a practical, end-to-end approach covering both inventory planning and inventory control. Participants learn the role and types of inventory, the components of inventory cost, and how to classify items using ABC, XYZ, and criticality analysis. The program covers demand analysis, replenishment models including economic order quantity, reorder point, min-max, and periodic review systems, and the calculation of safety stock based on service level targets and lead time variability. It then addresses stock control procedures for receiving, storage, issuing, and returns, inventory record accuracy, cycle counting and physical stocktaking, inventory valuation methods, management of slow-moving, obsolete, and expired stock, internal controls and loss prevention, inventory performance indicators, and the use of ERP systems, barcoding, and other technologies to improve visibility and accuracy. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with spreadsheet-based exercises, worked examples, and case studies. Participants leave with an ABC and XYZ classification model, reorder point and safety stock calculations, an inventory policy matrix, a cycle counting plan, an inventory controls checklist, an inventory KPI dashboard design, and an improvement plan for their organization.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the role of inventory in organizational performance, service delivery, and financial results on Day 1.
  • Evaluate the components of inventory cost, including holding, ordering, and shortage costs, and their impact on inventory decisions.
  • Apply ABC, XYZ, and criticality classification to segment inventory and set differentiated management policies.
  • Analyze demand patterns and consumption history to support accurate replenishment decisions.
  • Apply replenishment models, including economic order quantity, reorder point, min-max, and periodic review systems, to realistic inventory scenarios.
  • Calculate safety stock and reorder points based on demand variability, lead time variability, and service level targets.
  • Develop an inventory policy matrix that defines stocking decisions, reorder parameters, and review frequencies for each inventory category.
  • Implement effective stock control procedures for receiving, inspection, storage, issuing, transfers, and returns.
  • Design cycle counting programs and physical stocktake procedures that improve inventory record accuracy.
  • Evaluate inventory valuation methods and their effect on financial reporting and cost control.
  • Develop approaches for identifying, preventing, and disposing of slow-moving, obsolete, damaged, and expired stock.
  • Design an inventory KPI dashboard and improvement plan for the participant's organization by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for inventory managers and controllers, warehouse and stores managers, supply chain and logistics managers, materials planners, procurement professionals, and storekeepers responsible for planning, replenishing, storing, and controlling inventory. It is also relevant for finance and cost accounting professionals who manage inventory valuation and reporting, and for internal auditors and risk professionals who review inventory controls. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries and government entities managing central stores, strategic stocks, and public service supplies; in healthcare organizations managing medical supplies and pharmaceuticals with expiry and criticality requirements; in banks and financial institutions managing operational supplies, IT equipment, and branch materials; and in manufacturing, retail, utilities, and service organizations managing raw materials, spare parts, finished goods, and consumables. Operations managers, ERP and systems specialists, and department heads who depend on reliable stock availability will also benefit from the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how inventory decisions affect service levels, costs, cash flow, and operational continuity.
  • Identify and estimate the main costs associated with holding, ordering, and running out of stock.
  • Classify inventory items using ABC, XYZ, and criticality analysis and assign appropriate control levels.
  • Analyze consumption data to identify demand patterns and support replenishment planning.
  • Calculate economic order quantities, reorder points, and min-max levels for selected items.
  • Determine safety stock levels that reflect demand and lead time variability and target service levels.
  • Build an inventory policy matrix that guides consistent stocking and replenishment decisions.
  • Apply sound procedures for receiving, storage, issuing, and returns that protect stock accuracy.
  • Plan and conduct cycle counts and physical stocktakes and investigate and resolve variances.
  • Identify slow-moving, obsolete, and expired stock and recommend prevention and disposal actions.
  • Recognize control weaknesses and apply internal controls to reduce inventory losses.
  • Monitor inventory performance using key indicators such as inventory turnover, days on hand, fill rate, stockout rate, and record accuracy.
