Course Overview

The Internal Audit in Oil & Gas Training Course provides a practical understanding of internal auditing within the complex and risk-intensive environment of oil and gas operations. It examines how internal audit functions assess governance, risk management, internal controls, operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and the reliability of financial and operational information across upstream, midstream, and downstream activities. The course focuses on the distinctive risks associated with exploration and production, drilling, processing, transportation, refining, storage, and distribution. Participants will explore how to develop risk-based audit plans, define audit scopes, conduct fieldwork, evaluate control effectiveness, and identify weaknesses that may affect operational performance, asset integrity, financial management, or regulatory compliance. Particular attention is given to high-risk areas such as procurement and contracting, inventory and materials management, capital projects, maintenance, health, safety and environment (HSE), production accounting, revenue recognition, and joint venture operations. Through practical exercises and industry-based case studies, participants will strengthen their ability to conduct structured audits, document evidence, communicate findings, assess root causes, and recommend corrective actions that support accountability, operational resilience, and continuous improvement.
