Course Overview

This advanced practical course provides a structured approach to industrial hygiene, with a strong focus on identifying, assessing, and controlling workplace exposures that may affect employee health and operational performance. It integrates exposure science, workplace monitoring, risk assessment, and control strategies within industrial and high-risk environments. Participants will examine chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic hazards, with particular emphasis on airborne contaminants, noise, heat stress, radiation, and other occupational exposure factors. The program focuses on understanding exposure pathways, determining who may be exposed, assessing the magnitude and duration of exposure, and identifying conditions that require immediate or planned intervention. The course develops practical skills in exposure assessment, including sampling strategy, personal and area monitoring, direct-reading instruments, exposure limits, sampling quality, data interpretation, and statistical evaluation. It also addresses the relationship between exposure results, occupational exposure limits, health risks, and workplace control decisions. A strong emphasis is placed on the hierarchy of controls and the selection of effective engineering, administrative, and personal protective measures. Practical exercises enable participants to build exposure assessment strategies, interpret monitoring results, prioritize risks, evaluate control effectiveness, and develop actionable industrial hygiene programs.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the fundamental principles and scope of industrial hygiene.
  • Identify chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic workplace hazards.
  • Assess exposure pathways, affected worker groups, and exposure conditions.
  • Develop appropriate strategies for personal and area exposure monitoring.
  • Select suitable sampling methods and direct-reading instruments.
  • Apply occupational exposure limits when evaluating workplace exposures.
  • Interpret exposure monitoring data and identify significant exposure conditions.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of existing exposure controls.
  • Apply the hierarchy of controls to workplace exposure scenarios.
  • Develop engineering, administrative, and personal protective control strategies.
  • Establish practical industrial hygiene programs and monitoring priorities.
  • Strengthen exposure risk management through documentation, corrective actions, and continuous improvement.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for industrial hygienists, occupational health professionals, HSE and EHS specialists, safety engineers, environmental professionals, and personnel responsible for workplace exposure assessment and occupational health protection. It is also suitable for plant managers, operations and maintenance managers, process engineers, laboratory personnel, facility managers, occupational physicians, supervisors, and professionals working in high-risk industrial environments. The program is particularly relevant to professionals in oil and gas, petrochemicals, chemicals, manufacturing, mining, construction, utilities, power generation, pharmaceuticals, and other organizations where occupational exposure risks require systematic assessment and control.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify significant occupational health hazards across industrial workplaces.
  • Determine exposure routes and worker groups requiring assessment.
  • Design exposure assessment strategies based on workplace conditions and risk profiles.
  • Select appropriate personal, area, and task-based sampling approaches.
  • Use direct-reading instruments for preliminary exposure assessment and screening.
  • Evaluate exposure results against applicable occupational exposure limits.
  • Interpret sampling data and recognize exposure trends and variability.
  • Identify deficiencies in existing exposure control measures.
  • Select appropriate engineering and administrative controls for identified exposures.
  • Evaluate the suitability and limitations of respiratory and other personal protective equipment.
  • Develop industrial hygiene monitoring plans and exposure control programs.
  • Prepare practical corrective action and continuous improvement plans based on exposure findings.
