Course Overview

The Import, Export & Customs Clearance Training Course equips professionals with the practical knowledge needed to manage international shipments efficiently, accurately, and in full compliance with trade and customs requirements. In government entities, ministries, banks, healthcare organizations, manufacturing, retail, and distribution companies, and large corporations, imported equipment, materials, and products are often critical to operations, while exports may be central to revenue and trade objectives. Errors in documentation, classification, valuation, or procedures can lead to shipment delays, demurrage and storage charges, penalties, seized goods, disputes with suppliers and customers, and reputational damage. Many organizations rely heavily on freight forwarders and customs brokers without having sufficient internal knowledge to guide, check, and challenge their work. Common problems include inappropriate Incoterms that shift unexpected costs and risks to the organization, incomplete or inconsistent shipping documents, incorrect tariff classification, undervaluation or overvaluation of goods, missed opportunities for preferential duty rates or special customs regimes, delays caused by missing licenses or permits, and weak awareness of export controls, sanctions, and restricted goods requirements. These issues are often discovered only after goods arrive at the port or border. This course provides a practical, end-to-end view of import and export operations and customs clearance. Participants learn the international trade process flow, the roles of the parties involved, and the correct application of Incoterms 2020. The program covers commercial and transport documents, international payment methods including letters of credit under UCP 600 and documentary collections, and cargo insurance. It then addresses customs fundamentals, including tariff classification under the Harmonized System, customs valuation based on internationally recognized principles, rules of origin and preferential trade agreements, duties and taxes, customs declarations and clearance procedures, inspections, and special customs regimes such as temporary admission, bonded warehousing, free zones, re-export, and duty drawback. Participants also learn about restricted and prohibited goods, import and export licensing, export controls and sanctions screening, dangerous goods shipments, Authorized Economic Operator programs, electronic customs and single window systems, working with freight forwarders and customs brokers, trade compliance and post-clearance audits, and performance measurement for import and export operations. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with document reviews, classification and valuation exercises, and case studies. Participants leave with an import and export process map, an Incoterms selection guide, a shipping documents checklist, a tariff classification and customs valuation worksheet, a trade compliance checklist, an import and export KPI dashboard design, and an improvement plan for their organization.
