Course Overview

This advanced training course provides a practical understanding of the hydrogen economy and the growing role of low-carbon fuels in industrial decarbonization and energy transition strategies. It examines hydrogen production pathways, infrastructure, transportation, storage, end-use applications, economics, safety, and the development of integrated hydrogen value chains. The course distinguishes between conventional and low-carbon hydrogen pathways and evaluates technologies including electrolysis, natural gas reforming with carbon capture, and other emerging production methods. Participants will assess production efficiency, energy requirements, emissions intensity, technology maturity, infrastructure needs, and project scalability. Particular attention is given to hydrogen storage and transportation, including compression, liquefaction, pipelines, shipping, and hydrogen carriers such as ammonia and synthetic fuels. The program also examines low-carbon fuels including sustainable fuels, biofuels, synthetic fuels, renewable fuels, and other alternatives for sectors where direct electrification may be technically or economically challenging. Practical applications focus on evaluating hydrogen and low-carbon fuel opportunities, comparing production pathways, assessing infrastructure and project economics, identifying risks, and developing implementation strategies aligned with industrial decarbonization and Net Zero objectives.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the structure and development of the hydrogen economy and low-carbon fuel markets.
  • Evaluate major hydrogen production pathways and their emissions profiles.
  • Assess electrolysis technologies and renewable electricity requirements.
  • Compare reforming, carbon capture, and emerging low-carbon hydrogen production technologies.
  • Evaluate hydrogen storage, transportation, and distribution options.
