Course Overview

The HR Business Partner (HRBP) Training Course equips HR professionals with the business understanding, consulting skills, and influence needed to work as trusted advisors to senior leaders and line managers. In government entities, ministries, banks, oil and gas companies, and large corporations, the HR business partner role has become central to how HR delivers value. HRBPs are expected to understand the priorities and challenges of the business units they support, translate them into people priorities, and bring the right HR solutions, data, and expertise to improve performance. In practice, many HRBPs find themselves pulled back into transactional work, acting as a point of escalation for administrative issues rather than as strategic advisors. Others struggle to gain credibility with leaders because they lack business acumen, rely on opinion rather than evidence, or find it difficult to challenge constructively. Unclear boundaries with centers of expertise and HR shared services can also create duplication and confusion. This course addresses these challenges by building the specific capabilities that effective HR business partners need. Participants learn how to understand the business context of their client groups, including strategy, operating model, financial drivers, and performance measures. They develop a structured consulting approach covering contracting, diagnosis, solution design, implementation, and evaluation, and practice the interpersonal skills of stakeholder management, influencing, coaching leaders, and handling difficult conversations. The program also covers using people data to generate insights, leading talent reviews and workforce discussions, supporting organizational change, managing complex employee relations matters, and working effectively with centers of expertise and shared services. Throughout the five days, participants work on real challenges from their own client groups through case studies, role plays, and consulting exercises. They leave with a client group business profile, a stakeholder map, a people issues diagnosis, a consulting proposal, an HRBP people plan for their client group, and a personal development plan for strengthening their HR business partnering capability.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the purpose, responsibilities, and value of the HR business partner role within the HR operating model on Day 1.
  • Assess the participant's current HRBP practice and identify the balance between strategic, operational, and transactional activities.
  • Develop a business profile of the participant's client group covering strategy, priorities, operating model, financial drivers, and key performance measures.
  • Strengthen business acumen by interpreting key financial and operational information and linking it to people issues.
  • Apply a structured HR consulting cycle covering contracting, diagnosis, solution design, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Design a stakeholder map and engagement strategy for senior leaders and managers in the client group.
  • Implement influencing, questioning, and constructive challenge techniques in discussions with business leaders.
  • Apply people data and HR analytics to diagnose issues and present evidence-based recommendations.
  • Align workforce planning, talent reviews, succession, and capability development with client group priorities.
  • Develop practical approaches for supporting leaders through organizational change and restructuring.
  • Evaluate effective ways of working with centers of expertise and HR shared services to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Design an HRBP people plan for the participant's client group by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for HR business partners, senior HR business partners, HR managers, and HR generalists who support business units, directorates, or regions, as well as HR professionals preparing to move into business partnering roles. It is also relevant for HR leaders who manage HRBP teams or are introducing or refining the business partnering model in their organizations. It is particularly valuable for HR professionals in ministries and government entities who support sectors and directorates through transformation, restructuring, and performance improvement; in banks and financial institutions who partner with business lines such as retail, corporate banking, operations, risk, and technology; and in oil and gas and industrial organizations who support operations, engineering, projects, and support functions across multiple sites. Specialists from centers of expertise such as talent management, learning, reward, and organizational development, as well as employee relations professionals who work closely with HRBPs, will also benefit from the course.

  • Explain the HRBP role clearly and position it effectively with business leaders and HR colleagues.
