Course Overview

This advanced practical course provides a structured approach to managing heat stress and fitness for work in demanding occupational environments. It integrates heat exposure assessment, worker fitness, medical considerations, work organization, hydration, acclimatization, and emergency response to support safe and sustainable workforce performance. The course examines environmental and occupational factors that contribute to heat stress, including air temperature, humidity, radiant heat, air movement, workload, clothing, work duration, and individual susceptibility. Participants will learn how to assess heat exposure and identify workers, tasks, and conditions requiring additional controls. Particular emphasis is placed on fitness for work management, including the relationship between worker health, physical capacity, job demands, environmental conditions, fatigue, and operational safety. The program addresses practical approaches for fitness assessment, work restrictions, return-to-work considerations, and coordination between occupational health, HSE, supervisors, and operations. The course also develops practical strategies for heat stress prevention and response, including acclimatization, hydration, rest-work cycles, engineering controls, administrative controls, personal protective measures, early recognition of heat-related illness, and emergency response. Participants will apply these principles to develop workplace heat stress and fitness for work management programs.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the physiological and occupational factors associated with heat stress.
  • Identify environmental, workload, clothing, and individual factors influencing heat exposure.
  • Assess workplace heat stress using appropriate monitoring and evaluation methods.
  • Evaluate worker fitness in relation to job demands and environmental conditions.
  • Identify workers and tasks requiring enhanced heat stress controls.
  • Develop effective acclimatization and hydration strategies.
  • Apply work-rest schedules and administrative controls to reduce heat exposure.
  • Evaluate engineering and personal protective measures for hot work environments.
  • Establish practical fitness for work assessment and management processes.
  • Develop procedures for work restrictions, return to work, and fitness concerns.
  • Strengthen early recognition, first response, and emergency management of heat-related illness.
  • Establish integrated heat stress and fitness for work programs with measurable performance indicators.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for occupational health professionals, industrial hygienists, HSE and EHS specialists, safety professionals, occupational physicians, nurses, and personnel responsible for worker health and fitness for work. It is also suitable for operations and maintenance managers, supervisors, HR and workforce management professionals, emergency response personnel, site managers, and professionals responsible for workforce deployment in demanding environmental conditions. The program is particularly relevant to oil and gas, construction, mining, manufacturing, utilities, power generation, transportation, agriculture, and other industries where employees may work in hot environments, physically demanding conditions, remote locations, or high-risk operational settings.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify major environmental and occupational heat stress factors.
  • Assess heat exposure using appropriate workplace evaluation methods.
  • Recognize early signs and symptoms of heat-related illness.
  • Evaluate job demands and worker fitness in relation to operational conditions.
  • Identify individual and organizational factors that may affect fitness for work.
  • Develop practical acclimatization and hydration programs.
  • Design appropriate work-rest schedules for heat-exposed activities.
  • Select effective engineering, administrative, and personal protective controls.
  • Establish fitness for work assessment and decision-making processes.
  • Manage temporary work restrictions and return-to-work considerations.
  • Develop emergency response procedures for heat-related incidents.
  • Establish integrated heat stress and fitness for work management programs.
