Course Overview

This advanced training course provides a practical framework for managing healthcare waste and environmental compliance across hospitals, primary care centers, laboratories, and other healthcare facilities. Where general infection prevention programs treat waste as a single control, this course follows every healthcare waste stream from the point of generation to final disposal, with a focus on classification, segregation, treatment, contractor oversight, and regulatory compliance. The course examines healthcare waste categories, including sharps, infectious, pathological, pharmaceutical, cytotoxic, chemical, and radioactive waste, together with the requirements of national regulations, the GCC unified system for healthcare waste management, and WHO guidance on the safe management of wastes from healthcare activities. Particular attention is given to internal collection and storage, steam autoclaving and other non-burn treatment technologies, incineration and emission controls, the selection and supervision of licensed waste contractors, waste tracking documentation, and the management of expired and controlled pharmaceuticals. Through waste audits, segregation assessments, technology comparisons, and contractor inspection exercises, participants will develop the ability to design facility waste management plans, close compliance gaps, reduce waste volumes and costs, and prepare their organizations for regulatory inspections.

Learning Objectives

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Classify healthcare waste by category, hazard, and handling requirements.
  • Interpret national regulations, the GCC unified system, and WHO guidance.
  • Establish waste governance, committee roles, and a facility waste management plan.
  • Design segregation, color coding, container, and labeling systems at source.
  • Plan safe internal collection routes and central storage areas.
  • Evaluate on-site and off-site treatment technologies against defined criteria.
  • Control incineration emissions, treatment residues, and healthcare wastewater.
  • Manage pharmaceutical, cytotoxic, chemical, mercury, and radioactive waste streams.
  • Select, contract, and supervise licensed waste transporters and treatment contractors.
  • Maintain waste tracking records and chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Conduct healthcare waste compliance audits and prepare corrective action plans.
  • Monitor waste indicators and identify minimization and cost-saving opportunities.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for Environmental Services Managers, Healthcare Waste Officers, Infection Prevention and Control Managers, Facility Managers, HSE Officers, Pharmacy and Laboratory Managers, Radiation Safety Officers, and personnel responsible for generating or managing healthcare waste. It is also suitable for Quality and Patient Safety Managers, Environmental Compliance Officers, Health Regulators and Inspectors, Procurement and Contract Managers, Internal Auditors, and staff of healthcare waste collection, transport, and treatment companies. The program is particularly relevant to ministries of health, public and private hospitals, primary care networks, medical laboratories, dental and specialty clinics, environmental regulators, municipalities, and contractors that collect, treat, or dispose of healthcare waste.

Learning Outcomes

  • Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Assess the maturity of a facility's healthcare waste management system.
  • Identify and classify healthcare waste by hazard category.
  • Prepare a waste management plan that defines roles and responsibilities.
  • Design segregation, packaging, and labeling procedures for all departments.
  • Evaluate internal collection practices and central storage areas.
  • Select treatment technologies suited to waste quantities and characteristics.
  • Define safe disposal routes for pharmaceutical, chemical, cytotoxic, and radioactive waste.
  • Set prequalification criteria and contract terms for licensed waste contractors.
  • Track waste from the point of generation to final disposal.
  • Audit healthcare waste practices and contractor performance.
  • Develop indicators for monitoring waste quantities, costs, and compliance.
  • Prepare improvement plans that strengthen environmental compliance and reduce risk.
