Course Overview

This practical training course equips healthcare managers and analysts to turn routine hospital and health-system data into reliable performance information. It focuses on health-specific indicators such as length of stay, readmission, mortality, access and cost per case, and on the case-mix and risk adjustment needed to compare units, hospitals and periods fairly. The program examines where healthcare data comes from and what it can and cannot show, including electronic health records, patient administration systems, insurance claims, health information exchange and disease registries. Participants learn to write precise indicator definitions, build valid numerators and denominators, link records across sources, and recognize the effect of coding practice on reported results. Particular attention is given to analytical methods that managers can apply and explain: statistical process control, funnel plots, standardized ratios, benchmarking against peer groups, demand forecasting and the responsible use of predictive models and AI analytics. The course then addresses dashboard design for boards, executives and departments, and the governance that keeps indicators accurate, consistent and trusted across the organization. Through indicator-specification exercises, risk-adjustment worked examples, chart-interpretation drills and a dashboard governance workshop, participants will strengthen their ability to measure healthcare performance accurately, explain variation with confidence and support sound management decisions.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the main healthcare data sources and assess their fitness for analysis.
  • Define healthcare performance indicators with precise numerators, denominators, exclusions and attribution rules.
  • Analyze length of stay, readmission, mortality, access and utilization measures.
  • Explain case-mix classification and its role in comparing hospital activity and cost.
  • Apply risk-adjustment and standardization methods to produce fair comparisons between units and providers.
  • Link records across health records, claims and exchange data while protecting confidentiality.
  • Distinguish real performance change from random variation using statistical process control and funnel plots.
  • Benchmark performance against suitable peer groups and interpret differences cautiously.
  • Evaluate predictive models and AI analytics for risk stratification and demand planning.
  • Design tiered dashboards that present healthcare indicators clearly for boards, executives and departments.
  • Establish governance for indicator catalogs, validation, ownership, access and change control.
  • Develop a review process that converts dashboard findings into improvement decisions.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for managers and analysts in hospital performance, planning and strategy units, quality and patient-safety analysts, finance and costing analysts, health information and business intelligence staff, and department heads who rely on performance reports to manage services. It is also suitable for professionals in cluster and regional health offices, information centers of ministries and health authorities, health insurance and payer organizations, and public and private hospital groups that collect, compare or publish healthcare performance data. The course benefits most those who must define indicators, explain variation between providers, or design and govern dashboards used by executives and boards; no programming or specific software experience is required.

Learning Outcomes

  • Assess the coverage and limitations of healthcare data sources used for analysis.
  • Write indicator specifications that produce consistent results across departments and periods.
  • Calculate and interpret length of stay, readmission, mortality, access and utilization indicators.
  • Use case-mix information to explain differences in activity and cost per case.
  • Produce risk-adjusted and standardized indicators and explain their assumptions to managers.
  • Plan record linkage across clinical, administrative and claims data with privacy safeguards.
  • Read control charts and funnel plots to separate meaningful signals from normal variation.
  • Select appropriate peer groups and benchmarks for comparing hospitals and services.
  • Judge whether a predictive model or AI output is fit for management use.
  • Design board, executive and operational dashboards that support focused decisions.
  • Apply governance controls for indicator ownership, validation, access and versioning.
  • Prepare a performance analytics and dashboard plan for their organization.

Course Outline

Day 1

Healthcare Data Sources & Analytical Foundations

  • Role of analytics in healthcare performance management
  • Electronic health records and patient administration system data
  • Insurance claims and payer data for activity and cost analysis
  • Health information exchange and cross-provider patient records
  • Disease registries, surveys and patient-reported measures
  • Units of analysis: encounter, episode, admission and patient
  • Record linkage, unique patient identifiers and duplicate risk
  • Coding completeness and its effect on analytical results
  • Privacy, de-identification and approved secondary use of data
  • Practical Application: Assess the fitness of three hospital data sources for a defined management question
Day 2

Healthcare Performance Indicators & Indicator Specification

  • Structure, process and outcome measures in healthcare
  • Indicator specification: numerator, denominator, exclusions and attribution
  • Average length of stay and length-of-stay outliers
  • Unplanned readmission indicators and readmission windows

  • Access measures: waiting times, emergency department throughput and cancellations
  • Bed occupancy, operating room utilization and outpatient non-attendance
  • Cost per case and resource-use indicators
  • Leading and lagging indicators for healthcare managers
  • Practical Application: Write full specifications for a set of hospital performance indicators
Day 3

Case-Mix, Risk Adjustment & Fair Comparison

  • Why raw rates mislead when patient populations differ
  • Case-mix classification and diagnosis-related groups
  • Case-mix index and its use in activity and funding analysis
  • Comorbidity measures such as the Charlson and Elixhauser indices
  • Direct and indirect standardization
  • Observed-to-expected ratios and standardized mortality ratios
  • Small numbers, confidence intervals and statistical reliability
  • Coding intensity and documentation effects on adjusted results
  • Communicating risk-adjusted results to clinical and executive leaders
