Course Overview

The GIS & ArcGIS Pro Applications Training Course equips planners, engineers, analysts, and GIS and data professionals with the knowledge and practical skills needed to use geographic information systems, and ArcGIS Pro in particular, to capture, manage, analyze, and visualize spatial data and to produce maps and spatial analysis that support better planning and decision making. Geographic information systems are used across government, urban planning, utilities, energy, transport, environment, agriculture, telecommunications, and emergency management to answer questions about location, distribution, proximity, and change. ArcGIS Pro is a widely used professional desktop GIS application, and the ability to work with spatial data and perform spatial analysis is an increasingly valuable skill for technical and planning professionals. The course covers GIS concepts and ArcGIS Pro through hands-on practice. Participants learn GIS fundamentals, including spatial data, vector and raster models, coordinate systems and projections, and spatial data sources, and the ArcGIS Pro interface, projects, and geodatabases. The program then addresses working with and managing spatial data, creating and editing features, attribute data and tables, joins and relates, and symbology, labelling, and cartographic map design. Participants cover spatial analysis, including selection and query, proximity analysis such as buffers and overlays, spatial joins, and geoprocessing tools and models, and working with raster data and surface and terrain analysis. Participants also examine geocoding and address data, georeferencing, data quality and topology, 3D visualization, an introduction to spatial statistics, sharing maps and results including layouts and web maps, and an overview of how ArcGIS Pro connects to the wider ArcGIS ecosystem. Applied examples are drawn from planning, infrastructure, environment, and public services. Software version features may change, so the course focuses on transferable concepts and workflows. The course is delivered through step-by-step hands-on exercises, mapping and analysis labs, and an applied GIS project. Participants leave with a GIS concepts reference, an ArcGIS Pro workflow and tools guide, a spatial analysis exercise workbook, a map design and cartography checklist, and a GIS project template. Participants need basic computer skills; no prior GIS experience is required, and the course assumes access to ArcGIS Pro for practical work.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the role and applications of geographic information systems in planning and decision making on Day 1.
  • Explain GIS fundamentals, including vector and raster data, coordinate systems, and projections.
  • Navigate the ArcGIS Pro interface and work with projects and geodatabases.
  • Manage, create, and edit spatial data and features.
  • Work with attribute data, tables, joins, and relates.
  • Apply symbology, labelling, and cartographic map design.
  • Perform selection, query, and attribute and spatial analysis.
  • Apply proximity analysis, overlays, spatial joins, and geoprocessing tools and models.
  • Work with raster data and perform surface and terrain analysis.
  • Apply geocoding, georeferencing, data quality, and topology.
  • Apply 3D visualization and an introduction to spatial statistics.
  • Share maps and results through layouts and web maps and connect to the ArcGIS ecosystem by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for planners, engineers, and technical professionals who work with spatial data, GIS officers and analysts, data analysts extending into spatial analysis, and professionals in organizations adopting or expanding GIS. It is also relevant for environmental, infrastructure, utility, and urban planning professionals, and staff responsible for maps and spatial information. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries, government entities, municipalities, and public authorities, urban planning and infrastructure organizations, utilities, energy, and telecommunications companies, environment, agriculture, and water organizations, and transport and emergency management agencies. Basic computer skills are required; no prior GIS experience is needed, and practical work assumes access to ArcGIS Pro.
